The south gate of the Jardin des Plantes to be restored soon
Built in 1841, the south gate of Montpellier's Jardin des Plantes has long been the main entrance to the botanical garden. In order to restore it to its former glory and soon regain its historic access, a complete renovation has been undertaken.

Listed as a historic monument, it is undergoing meticulous restoration, including the complete dismantling of the opening sections and delicate sanding of the side grilles. Extensive research has identified its original colors, respecting the work of the craftsmen of the time. This stratigraphic study revealed that its original colors combined graphite gray and gilding.
The reinstallation of the restored gate and the completion of work on its surroundings are scheduled for fall 2025. This project is being carried out thanks to a collaboration between the heritage and architectural departments of the City of Montpellier, the University of Montpellier, and the Faculty of Medicine.
This restoration is funded by the University of Montpellier, the City of Montpellier, and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole.
