The South Gate of the Jardin des Plantes to Be Restored Soon
Built in 1841, the south gate of the Jardin des Plantes in Montpellier has long served as the main entrance to the Jardin des Plantes. To restore it to its former glory and soon reopen its historic entrance, a complete renovation has been undertaken.

Designated as a historic landmark, it is undergoing meticulous restoration, including the complete removal of the window sashes and careful sanding of the side grilles. Extensive research has made it possible to identify its original colors, in keeping with the techniques of the artisans of that era. This stratigraphic study revealed that its original colors combined graphite gray and gilding.
The reinstallation of the restored gate and the completion of work on the surrounding area are scheduled for fall 2025. This project is being carried out through a collaboration between the heritage and architectural departments of the City of Montpellier, the University of Montpellier, and the School of Medicine.
This restoration is funded by the University of Montpellier, the City of Montpellier, and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole
