An International Award for Students
The goal of the Undergraduate Awards is to identify the world’s most outstanding students in each discipline. UM students UM now apply to this prestigious program, with the University of Montpellier being the first in France to be affiliated with it.
It's the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for students. The Undergraduate Awards were established in 2012 under the patronage of Irish President Michael D. Higgins. Today, they constitute the world’s largest program in the field of academic awards. The goal is to support the world’s most brilliant and innovative students in every discipline. Open to 25 categories across all fields of knowledge—including science and technology, law, economics, and the humanities and social sciences—the award is given to the best projects or research papers submitted from around the world.
International Recognition
Every year in September, the winners in each discipline are invited to Dublin, Ireland, for four days—all expenses paid—to attend the medal ceremony at a global summit. This event opens up exciting opportunities for the new winners… and even opens certain doors, explains Evelina Colacino, a chemistry professor and researcher at the Max Mousseron Institute of Biomolecules.
“Winning the UA awards means gaining recognition in one’s field of research. Each winner is notably honored by having their project published in an international journal: *The Undergraduate Journal*.” This journal is read by researchers seeking doctoral candidates with promising work, as well as by companies looking to recruit top talent or develop technological innovations.“It has now become a tool for identifying young talent around the world,” explains Evelina Colacino.
Evelina is the program director and founder at the University of Montpellier. For her, participating in the UA World Summit offers winners numerous opportunities: “They’ll meet prominent figures, take part in interdisciplinary workshops to develop their projects in collaboration with other disciplines… It’s an opportunity for them to start building a valuable international network that they can draw on throughout their careers.”
Registration is currently open
UM studentsUM now apply to this prestigious program. But they need to hurry: the application deadline is May 31, 2016. The selection process is based solely on merit, Evelina Colacino emphasizes: “Applications are evaluated with the utmost anonymity. All candidates undergo the same evaluation process, regardless of their university of origin, field of study, or country of origin.”…”
Who is eligible? All students may apply. However, it is strongly recommended that you wait until you are in your second year of a master’s program before applying: “The bar is set high, so you need to demonstrate a certain level of maturity to have a good chance of being selected.” explains Evelina Colacino. Note that the program is also open to students who earned their master’s degree the previous year.
