An international prize for students
Identifying the world's brightest students in each discipline: that is the goal of the Undergraduate Awards. UM students can now apply for this prestigious program, to which the University of Montpellier is the first in France to be affiliated.
It is the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for students. The Undergraduate Awards were established in 2012 under the patronage of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. Today, they are the world's largest academic awards program. The idea is to support the world's most brilliant and innovative students in every discipline. Open to 25 categories in all fields of knowledge, science and technology, law, economics, humanities, and social sciences, the prize is awarded to the best projects or research work presented worldwide.
International recognition
Every year in September, the winners in each discipline are invited to Dublin, Ireland, for four days, with all expenses paid, to attend their medal ceremony at a global summit. This event opens up exciting opportunities for the new winners... and even opens certain doors, explains Evelina Colacino, a chemistry teacher and researcher at the Max Mousseron Biomolecules Institute.
"Winning the UA means being recognized in your field of research. Each winner is rewarded with the publication of their project in an international journal: The Undergraduate Journal." This journal is read by researchers looking for promising doctoral students, and by companies seeking talent to recruit or technological innovations to develop."It has now become a tool for identifying young talent around the world," says Evelina Colacino.
Evelina is the program manager and initiator at the University of Montpellier. For her, participating in the UA World Summit offers winners many opportunities: "They will meet prominent figures and take part in cross-disciplinary workshops to develop their projects in conjunction with other disciplines... It's an opportunity for them to start building a valuable international network that they can leverage throughout their careers."
Registration is now open
UM students can now apply for this prestigious program. But they must hurry: registration closes on May 31, 2016. The evaluation is based solely on merit, insists Evelina Colacino: "Applications are evaluated in complete anonymity. All candidates are subject to the same evaluation process, regardless of their university, field of study, country of origin, etc."
Who is eligible? All students can apply. However, it is strongly recommended that you wait until you are in your second year of a master's program before applying: "The level is high, so you need to demonstrate a certain maturity to have a good chance of being selected," explains Evelina Colacino. Please note that participation is also open to students who obtained their Master's degree the previous year.
