A conference on : "information under influence, the faltering of traditional media and democratic issues" at the University of Montpellier
As part of its "rendez-vous de l'Eco" series, the Faculty of Economics at the University of Montpellier is organizing a conference on the theme of theme: " l'information sous influence, vacillement des médias traditionnels et enjeux démocratiques " on Thursday 30 January 2025 from 6:00 pm, at the Richter Campus of the Faculty of Economics.
Does the economic fragility of the media encourage misinformation?
Democracy can only function if it is built on a shared perception of reality, of facts that can be verified and discussed" (in the sense of democratic debate) (Hannah Arendt, Truth and Politics, Crisis of Culture, 1954). New information practices, combined with the arrival of digital giants in the information space, are undermining the process of information production by traditional media.
From the massive collection of personal data to the siphoning off of online advertising resources and the capture of users' attention, all these factors tend to call into question the economic model for the production of quality information, paving the way for the privatization of the public arena for the benefit of companies that turn disinformation and the polarization of debates into a veritable business.
