Lancé en mars 2019 dans le cadre du Programme d’Excellence I-SITE « Montpellier Université d’Excellence » (MUSE), le Montpellier Advanced Knowledge Institute on Transitions (MAK’IT) est un nouveau venu parmi les Instituts d’Etudes Avancées (IEA).  Lieu de développement des connaissances, de rencontre et d'interface entre l'écosystème local et la science internationale, MAK’IT vise à stimuler la contribution des communautés scientifiques à l’analyse, l’accompagnement et l’accélération des transitions nécessaires à la réalisation des objectifs de développement durable (ODD), dans les domaines de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation, de l’environnement et de la santé.  Outil d’intelligence collective, l’Institut encourage les échanges interdisciplinaires et le développement d’approches nouvelles et de méthodologies de recherche innovantes, en étroite collaboration avec les décideurs politiques et les citoyens.   Vision  Les Objectifs de Développement Durable (ODD), tels qu’adoptés sous l’égide des Nations Unies, invitent à une profonde transformation de nos sociétés, vers des modèles plus innovants, intégratifs et adaptatifs. Cette transformation repose sur une série de transitions majeures à orchestrer au croisement des domaines de la santé, de l’environnement et du climat, de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation. Du local au global, elles représentent, pour la recherche, autant de défis à accompagner. Renouveler les lieux et formes de mobilisation de la connaissance scientifique et inventer de nouvelles enceintes où appréhender les controverses, multiples, suscitées par ces changements, c’est l’objectif que s’est fixé MAK’IT.  Fonctions  Programmer : contribuer à la programmation de la recherche sur les transitions et renforcer la mise en place d’une école de pensée aux niveaux local, national et international.  Se projeter : identifier et stimuler la réalisation d’exercices de prospective afférents, et renforcer l’expertise scientifique et les capacités nécessaires à la mise en œuvre des transitions.  Influencer : alimenter les débats au sein d’instances nationales et internationales où se pensent et s’opèrent les transitions, en jouant le rôle d’interface science-société et science-politique.  Activités Accueil de chercheurs internationaux MAK’IT offre à des chercheurs internationaux de tous horizons géographiques et disciplinaires la possibilité d’un séjour de recherche de plusieurs mois à Montpellier. L’Institut anime leurs échanges et accompagne leurs interactions avec la communauté scientifique montpelliéraine et le monde extra-académique.  Libérés de leurs obligations quotidiennes, ces chercheurs mènent, individuellement ou en groupe, le projet scientifique de leur choix, en lien avec les structures de recherche montpelliéraines. Ces projets se caractérisent par une approche interdisciplinaire forte centrée sur l’analyse des controverses, des méthodologies et axes de recherche innovants, des interactions science-société réelles et un impact sur les transitions vers le développement durable.  Les candidatures à un séjour au sein de l’Institut sont soumises à un processus d’évaluation sélectif par le Conseil scientifique de MAK’IT, composé d’experts internationaux indépendants. Celui-ci se réunit deux fois par an pour évaluer les dossiers déposés dans le cadre des appels à candidatures principaux de l’Institut : « SCIENTIFIQUES INVITES », « COHORTE », « French Institutes for Advanced Study » (FIAS) et « Constructive Advanced Thinking » (CAT).  Organisation d’évènements de portée internationale à Montpellier Afin de renforcer l’implication des communautés scientifiques dans le débat public, MAK’IT organise tout un programme évènementiel autour des accueils de chercheurs internationaux. Des rendez-vous hebdomadaires entre chercheurs-résidents leur permettent de discuter de l’impact de leurs travaux au-delà des frontières disciplinaires et sectorielles. Des temps d’échanges mensuels, les « MAK’IT Talks », associant universitaires et chercheurs, décideurs politiques, représentants de la société civile et du secteur privé favorisent la réflexion autour d’enjeux en lien avec les défis sociétaux présents et futurs.   Partenariats et élaboration d’initiatives européennes et internationales en lien avec les ODD  MAK’IT collabore avec d’autres organismes, espaces, think tanks de même nature ou s’intéressant à des thématiques similaires, avec un accent particulier sur l’accélération des transitions vers le développement durable et le renforcement des capacités scientifiques dans les pays des « Suds ». L’Institut a notamment tissé des partenariats privilégiés avec les réseaux français (RFIEA), européen (NetIAS) et international (UBIAS) d’Instituts d’Etudes Avancées.   Véritable laboratoire du changement, MAK’IT s’engage à ce que les conclusions de ses travaux soient utiles aux générations futures et stimulent leur engagement en faveur du développement durable. With his Ocean One diving archaeology robot, Oussama Khatib, director of Stanford's Robotics Lab and world-renowned researcher, is shining a spotlight on the mysteries of the deep sea and robotics. On February 20, on the recommendation of his French peers Philippe Poignet, Vincent Creuze, and Philippe Fraisse, all three robotics researchers at Lirmm, the Franco-American was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Montpellier. 

It was on the recommendation of Montpellier professor Eric Delaporte, director of the TransVIHMI international joint unit, that the University of Montpellier awarded an honorary doctorate to Jean-Jacques Muyembe on December 9.

The University of Montpellier honored Canada on Friday, December 2, by awarding honorary doctorates to Quebec professors Yves Bergeron and Yves Mauffette. On the recommendation of Patrick Caron, Vice President for International Relations, the University of Montpellier awarded Professor Tawana Kupe an honorary doctorate last October. A native of Zimbabwe, this media specialist has enjoyed a brilliant career in South Africa, culminating in his current position as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Pretoria.

It was on the recommendation of Montpellier professor Philippe Vande Perre that the University of Montpellier awarded an honorary doctorate to Zambian pediatrician Chipepo Kankasa last October. Unanimously recognized for her research on mother-to-child transmission of HIV, she is also the initiator of access to antiretroviral treatment for African children and prevention strategies in Zambia to combat HIV transmission through breastfeeding.

Fresco, professor and president of Wageningen University & Research, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Montpellier by Philippe Augé, president of the University of Montpellier.
