Montpellier Universe and Particles Laboratory (LUPM)
Content type : Page
The Montpellier Universe and Particles Laboratory (LUPM) is dedicated to the study of the Universe in its entirety or in its smallest dimensions. At LUPM, researchers and teacher-researchers study fundamental constituents such as the most elementary particles, atoms and molecules, as well as the largest and oldest gravitational structures such as stars and galaxies. Organized into three scientific teams, LUPM's field of research is vast, covering major areas of theoretical physics, fundamental and observational astrophysics, such as the physics of the primordial universe, the study of the properties of elementary particles, the nature of dark matter, the objects at the origin of high-energy cosmic rays, the formation of the first molecules in the Universe, the structure and evolution of stars, and their interaction with the interstellar medium. The Institut Montpellierrain Alexander Grothendieck - IMAG - is a joint research unit of the CNRS and the University of Montpellier, with almost 170 members, and is located on the University's Triolet campus. Research at IMAG covers a very broad spectrum, from fundamental mathematics to industrial applications, not forgetting didactics and epistemology. The laboratory is structured around 4 research teams: Géométrie, Topologie et Algèbre (GTA); Analyse, Calcul Scientifique Industriel et Optimisation de Montpellier (ACSIOM); Probabilités et Statistique (EPS); Didactique et Épistémologie des Mathématiques (DEMa). It also has a joint project-team with Inria and HydroSciences Montpellier, the Lemon team, created in January 2019.IMAG's research activities position it as one of the leading gateways to mathematics and its applications in the south of France.
