The Mediterranean: One of the Regions Most Vulnerable to Climate Change

Algal blooms, ocean acidification and rising sea temperatures, desert encroachment, increasing air pollution, soil degradation, freshwater scarcity, species extinction… The Mediterranean basin is a region particularly threatened by the effects of global warming.
In this context, scientists are closely studying these impacts. They have now established that Mediterranean ecosystems and societies are among the most threatened on the planet by this anticipated climate change. The expected effects there are particularly significant, and the environmental and socioeconomic impacts are likely to be very pronounced.
This evening discussion will be moderated by three researchers:

  • Christophe Bouvier, hydrologist and research director at the French National Research Institute Research Development (IRD);
  • Sylvain Massuel, researcher and water resources specialist at the French National Research Institute Research Development (IRD);
  • Hélène Rey-Valette, socio-economist and associate professor at the University of Montpellier.
