The Mediterranean: one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change
Algal blooms, acidification and rising sea temperatures, desertification, increased air pollution, soil degradation, freshwater scarcity, species extinction... The Mediterranean basin is a region particularly threatened by the effects of global warming.
In this context, scientists are taking a very close interest in its impacts. They have now established that Mediterranean ecosystems and societies are among the most threatened on the planet by this predicted climate change. The expected effects are particularly significant, and the environmental and socio-economic impacts are likely to be very pronounced.
This evening debate will be led by three researchers:
- Christophe Bouvier, hydrologist, research director at the French National Research Institute Research Sustainable Development (IRD);
- Sylvain Massuel, researcher, water resources specialist at the French National Research Institute Research Sustainable Development (IRD);
- Hélène Rey-Valette, socio-economist, senior lecturer at the University of Montpellier.
