The Mediterranean: one of the regions most vulnerable to climate change

Algae blooms, acidification and rising sea temperatures, advancing deserts, intensifying atmospheric pollution, soil degradation, freshwater scarcity, species extinction... The Mediterranean basin is a region particularly threatened by the effects of global warming.
Against this backdrop, scientists are taking a very close interest in its impacts. They have now established that Mediterranean ecosystems and societies are among the most threatened on the planet by this predicted climate change. The expected effects are particularly significant, and the environmental and socio-economic impacts are likely to be very pronounced.
This evening debate will be led by three researchers:

  • Christophe Bouvier, hydrologist, Director of Research at the Institut de Research pour le Développement (IRD);
  • Sylvain Massuel, researcher and water resources specialist at the Institut de Research pour le Développement (IRD);
  • Hélène Rey-Valette, socio-economist, lecturer at the University of Montpellier.
