Archaeology is a scientific discipline that aims to reconstruct the history of mankind, from its origins to the present day, based on the material remains that have survived. It is based on the study of objects and traces left in the ground by different human occupations (tools, bones, pottery, weapons, jewelry, clothing, coins, footprints, tracks, paintings, buildings, infrastructures, etc.).
Archaeology is at the crossroads of the sciences, and since the 1980s, the generalist has given way to the specialist. Today, archaeologists are scientists and specialists in various fields: archaeozoology, archaeogeography, paleobotany, paleometallurgy, carpology, ceramology, funerary archaeology...
This scientific discipline now also calls on new technologies such as satellite detection, digital photogrammetry and paleogenetic analysis of ancient DNA molecules.
