Archaeology is a scientific discipline dedicated to reconstructing the history of humanity, from its origins to the present day, based on the material remains that have survived. It is based on the study of objects and traces left in the ground by various human settlements (tools, bones, pottery, weapons, jewelry, clothing, coins, footprints, tracks, paintings, buildings, infrastructure, etc.).
Archaeology lies at the intersection of the sciences, and since the 1980s, the generalist has given way to the specialist. Today, archaeologists are scientists and experts in various specialized fields: archaeozoology, archaeogeography, paleobotany, paleometallurgy, carpology, ceramology, funerary archaeology…
This scientific discipline now also draws on new technologies such as satellite detection, digital photogrammetry, and paleogenetic analyses conducted on ancient DNA molecules.
