“Sex” refers to the biological distinction between males and females, while “gender” refers to the cultural dimension encompassing the social roles, psychological attributes, and identities of men and women.
Gender is a concept used in the social sciences to refer to the non-biological differences between women and men. The term thus refers to the social and cultural dimensions of the social roles, moral attributes, and identities of men and women.
Gender studies, for their part, constitute a multidisciplinary field of research that examines differences in gender roles, as well as the representations and beliefs associated with these differences. They shed light on inequalities and power dynamics linked to constructed identities, through a hierarchy of the feminine and the masculine.
This science-society debate, which is part of Pint of Science will be hosted by:
- Florence Apparaill, research director at INSERM and representative of the association Women and Science;
- Francis Poulat, research fellow at the Institute of Human Genetics (IGH);
- Geneviève Zoïa, professor of ethnology at the Faculty of Education, University of Montpellier.
