Science Bar: “Wine: Past, Present, and Future – Geology, Archaeology, and Climate Change”
This event has already taken place!
Brasserie le Dôme – 2 Avenue Georges Clémenceau, 34000 Montpellier.
Free admission (subject to availability).
The season kicks off with an evening dedicated to wine for the first Bar des Sciences event of 2019!
This beverage, closely tied to the history of human ingenuity, has been a part of the greatest civilizations of antiquity. Vines and wine have always been an important part of Western societies… But from amphora to bottle, wines have certainly changed!
Today, the impact of climate change on vineyards is no longer a matter of debate and is causing significant upheaval throughout the entire industry. Given the major socio-economic stakes involved, the entire sector must adapt. Ultimately, what wines will we be drinking in the coming decades?
This unique science-society debate brings together five researchers for a special occasion:
- Bruno Blondin, Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Viticulture and Oenology at Montpellier SupAgro;
- Hervé Hannin, Director of Development at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Viticulture and Oenology at Montpellier SupAgro;
- Claude Raynaud, research director at the Laboratory of Archaeology of Mediterranean Societies (CNRS – Paul-Valéry University of Montpellier);
- Michel Séranne, researcher at the Geosciences Laboratory (CNRS – University of Montpellier);
- Jean-Marc Touzard, research director at INRA and deputy director of the Innovation and Development in Agriculture and Food unit (INRA–CIRAD–Montpellier SupAgro).
The Science Bar presents its 2019 vintage—enjoy it to your heart’s content!

Special event celebrating the Bar des sciences’ 20th anniversary!
Science and technology are becoming an increasingly prominent part of our daily lives; discussing them is a democratic act
Human connections, interdisciplinary dialogue, cultural exchange, and the sharing of perspectives… A far cry from a formal lecture, the Science Bar is an invitation for scientists and experts in a given field to engage with the general public.
Co-produced by the University of Montpellier and the Languedoc-Roussillon Universities COMUE, in partnership with INSERM, IRD, and IRSTEA, the Montpellier Science Bar provides a unique venue for public debate that fosters dialogue between science and society.
The season is organized with the invaluable support of Brasserie le Dôme, Radio Aviva, Brain Awareness Week, and Pint of Science.
