Abstract

Montpellier has always played an important role in the history of science. It owes this to its university—one of the oldest in Europe (founded in 1289)—to its diverse and prestigious schools, to its laboratories and research centers, and thus to the long-recognized quality of its ever-evolving teams of professors, researchers, and engineers.
Initially driven by its school of medicine, the city’s scientific influence has expanded over the centuries to encompass all disciplines. Botany, agronomy, chemistry, pharmacology, physics, civil engineering, hydraulics, biology, electronics, mathematics…  The list is long—it includes numerous fields and prominent historical figures from Montpellier who have contributed to the development of science and technology. This rich history deserves to be better known and celebrated.
Encouraged by this prestigious past, the present and future of science in Montpellier continue to strive for excellence.
