This event has already taken place!
Thursday, November 23, 2017, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Faculty of Science, Triolet Campus, Lecture Hall 6.02

After a brief overview of the history of the America’s Cup, we will explore how, over the course of just a few years, the teams competing in this legendary race have transformed the face of sailing—even for the average person—by shifting boats from Archimedes-style design to winged (lift-assisted) design.
The session will explore the benefits of computer simulation and the significant role that science plays in the design of these "Formula 1s of the seas."
Finally, we will look at a specific example that outlines the technological choices made for the 2013 event in San Francisco and the 2017 event in Bermuda.
