Planet Ocean Montpellier – Allée Ulysse – Odysseum – Montpellier

On Thursday, April 21, at 7:00 p.m., the Planet Ocean Aquarium and MUSE’s KIM Sea & Coast are hosting a free lecture (registration required; see below) on the topic: “Marine Geology and Scientific Ocean Drilling,” presented by Benoît Ildefonse of the Montpellier Geosciences Laboratory.

The lecture “Marine Geology, Scientific Ocean Drilling” draws on recent findings from the IODP (International Ocean Discovery Program) regarding the oceanic crust to explore the processes of crust formation at oceanic ridges. After reviewing the methods used in marine geology, the speaker will briefly explain how ocean drilling works. Benoît Ildefonse will then present some results from drilling expeditions at mid-ocean ridges, as well as the challenges sometimes encountered when drilling up to 1,500 meters below the ocean floor. Finally, he will discuss future challenges, with a particular focus on the “MoHole to the Mantle” project, which aims to reach and sample the Earth’s mantle beneath the Pacific crust at a depth of 6 km.

The speaker: Benoît ILDEFONSE is director of the Montpellier Geosciences Laboratory. He joined the CNRS in Montpellier in 1991, following a PhD in structural geology in Lyon in 1987 and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. He works on the formation and evolution of the oceanic crust through the petrological, petrophysical, and microstructural study of the rocks that compose it. Involved in scientific ocean drilling programs (ODP, then IODP) since 1997, he has notably participated in six drilling expeditions on ocean ridges.
