Planet Ocean Montpellier - Allée Ulysse - Odysseum - Montpellier

On Thursday April 21, at 7:00 pm, the Planet Ocean Aquarium and MUSE's KIM Sea & Coast will be hosting a free lecture (registration required, see below) on "Marine geology, scientific ocean drilling", given by Benoît Ildefonse from the Géosciences Montpellier laboratory.

The "Marine Geology, Scientific Ocean Drilling" conference builds on the recent results of the IODP (International Ocean Discovery Program) in the oceanic crust, to discuss crust formation processes at ocean ridges. After an overview of marine geology methods, the speaker will briefly explain how ocean drilling works. Benoît Ildefonse will then present some of the results of drilling expeditions to the ridges, as well as the difficulties sometimes encountered when drilling down to 1500 meters below the ocean floor. Finally, he will discuss the challenges of the future, in particular the "MoHole to the Mantle" project, whose ambition is to reach and sample the earth's mantle beneath the Pacific crust at a depth of 6 km.

Speaker: Benoît ILDEFONSE is Director of the Géosciences Montpellier laboratory. He joined the CNRS in Montpellier in 1991, after a thesis in structural geology in Lyon in 1987 and a post-doctoral stay at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Zürich. His work focuses on the formation and evolution of the oceanic crust, through petrological, petrophysical and microstructural studies of its constituent rocks. Involved in scientific ocean drilling programs (ODP, then IODP) since 1997, he has participated in 6 drilling expeditions on ocean ridges.
