The role of the forensic pathologist has become considerably broader and more complex, in particular as a result of the increasing importance of scientific evidence in criminal proceedings, and greater attention being paid to the victim. Forensic expertise, which concerns people who are most often vulnerable, must offer a high standard of reception and care, and intervene at an early stage in the investigation to ensure that evidence is preserved. In addition to the classic role of the forensic pathologist, concerning violence committed on a living or deceased person, he or she is sometimes called upon to provide expertise in more specialized fields, such as anatomopathology and toxicology. It therefore plays a vital role in police investigations and criminal trials.
