The duties of forensic pathologists have become considerably broader and more complex, due in particular to the growing importance of scientific evidence in criminal trials and greater consideration for victims. Forensic expertise involving individuals, who are often vulnerable, must be provided in a welcoming and supportive manner and must be involved from the outset of the investigation to ensure that evidence is preserved. In addition to the traditional role of the medical examiner, which concerns violence committed against a living or deceased person, the medical examiner is sometimes called upon to provide expertise in more specialized fields, such as anatomical pathology and toxicology. The medical examiner therefore plays a vital role in police investigations and criminal trials.
