The scope of a medical examiner’s duties has expanded considerably and become more complex, due in particular to the growing importance of scientific evidence in criminal trials and a greater focus on the victim. Forensic examinations involving individuals—who are often vulnerable—must be conducted with sensitivity and care, and must begin at the very start of the investigation to ensure the preservation of evidence. In addition to the traditional role of the forensic pathologist—which involves cases of violence against living or deceased individuals—they are sometimes called upon to provide expertise in more specialized fields, such as pathological anatomy and toxicology. As a result, they play a crucial role in police investigations and criminal trials.
