Emerging collective dynamics in dense active matter

  • Category: Scientific conference
  • Dates: February 6, 2026
  • Hours: From 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
  • Location: Triolet Campus - Building 20 - Physics Lecture Hall - Place Eugène Bataillon, Montpellier

The Research Center conferences aim to raise awareness within the community about new topics and technological innovations.

Aimed at a wide audience—students and researchers from all disciplines—they draw on the multidisciplinary expertise of the MIPS Center, partner centers and structures, and national and international teams.

They are held on the first Friday of each month at 11:30 a.m. and are followed by a buffet lunch, providing an opportunity to continue discussions.

How do large groups of individuals or self-propelled units move together? During the San Fermín festival in Pamplona, dense crowds were observed swaying spontaneously in a synchronized manner, without a leader or external signal.

This seminar combines experimental observations of human crowds with numerical simulations of minimal models of active matter, offering new insights into the microscopic mechanisms underlying collective dynamics in dense, non-equilibrium systems.

This event is part of the MIPS Research Hub's monthly seminar series, which aims to promote scientific exchange and highlight new research topics and technological innovations.
