Proofs of Love
By Camille Gharbi, photographer.
This series of photographs seeks to examine domestic violence and our response to it through its most extreme manifestation: spousal homicide.
By focusing on everyday objects turned into murder weapons, Camille Gharbi invites us to take a step back and reflect on acts whose recurrence seems to reveal “a deep societal malaise that it is high time we fully grasped.”
Her intention is as follows: “[…] to address this subject—which is both terrible and all too common—I have chosen to focus my photographic work on these everyday objects that are transformed into murder weapons. These familiar artifacts, most of which come from my own home and are photographed against a simple light blue background, do not immediately reveal the violence of the crimes to which they refer. This sense of distance requires a moment of reflection. The murders of women by their partners, ex-partners, or lovers are not merely isolated cases affecting a specific segment of the population.”
