The University of Montpellier houses a wide variety of objects and specimens in fields ranging from astronomy, anatomy, and botany to paleontology, scientific instruments, ethnology, mineralogy, and zoology.

Every spring, these collections are interpreted through the lens of one or more contemporary artists.

This is how Judith Rothchild, an American artist based in the South of France, became captivated by the zoology collection, particularly by the sometimes unusual way the animals were arranged in the storage rooms. She created large drawings and “manière noire” engravings that are both realistic and full of humor, in which the framing and angles of view create poetic or comical scenes.
