“Fluid Dynamics and Epidemiology” – Lydia Bourouiba
This event has already taken place!
Labex NUMEV is particularly honored to welcome Lydia Bourouiba, a world-renowned scientist known for her work—particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic—as part of her flagship project, SATIS.

Lydia Bourouiba is an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the Fluid Dynamics of Disease Transmission Laboratory—Fluids and Health Network—at MIT in the United States.
As part of the SATIS flagship project funded by the Numev LabEx, we are hosting the
Prof. Lydia Bourouiba from MIT. Prof. Bourouiba is a world-renowned expert in fluid mechanics, particularly in the field of
, with a focus on the intersection of fluid dynamics and epidemiology. Her group aims to elucidate the fundamental physical
mechanisms that shape the transmission dynamics of pathogens in human, animal, and plant populations, where droplets,
bubbles, and multiphase and complex flows play a central role. She uses a combination of theoretical (applied mathematics—
, including differential equations, linear algebra, nonlinear dynamics, waves, and stability) and experimental approaches—
—(flow visualization, high-speed imaging techniques, microscopy, and image processing)—to elucidate the fundamental
physical mechanisms of transmission of nosocomial diseases, respiratory diseases, waterborne diseases, and foliar
diseases where fluids are ubiquitous, and to design and formulate new control strategies.
She is a world-class scientist who has been at the forefront of science during the COVID pandemic. Her 2018 TED MED
talk on transmission was prescient and demonstrates the depth of her inquiry and work. We believe that it would be
beneficial for the Montpellier community for her to come and give a talk on her latest research.
