Hosting a delegation of academics from Southern Africa visiting the University of Montpellier.
Montpellier National School of Chemistry, Mousseron lecture hall. By invitation only.

On Friday, July 1, the University of Montpellier will welcome a large delegation of academics from South Africa (approximately 130 presidents and vice presidents). This visit is part of South African Higher Education & Research Week in France, organized by South African authorities and institutions and Campus France from June 27 to July 1, 2022.

The University of Montpellier's welcome to this delegation follows on from the New Africa-France Summit, organized by the Presidency of the Republic in October 2021, and responds to the conclusions calling for the strengthening of Montpellier's role as a hub and gateway between European and African academic communities.

This welcome day is organized in conjunction with the French Embassy in South Africa and partners of the I-SITE program of excellence led by UM, including research organizations more specifically involved in the partnership with South African universities (CNRS, IRD, CIRAD).

After presenting the role of I-Site in the dynamics and programming of activities in the Montpellier cluster to the South African guests, there will be three roundtable discussions involving South African and French colleagues. These three roundtables will address:

  • the importance of the links between the challenges of agriculture and food, health, and the environment (Feeding, Caring, Protecting) in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • partnerships to be strengthened between South African and French universities;
  • the link with Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole and its Med-Vallée project, the role of the University in regional development dynamics.
