Since the 1995–2000 period—and even more so since 2013–2015—there has been talk of a school system that is both demanding and supportive. While it is easy to acknowledge a convergence of views on these topics within the fields of education and training, this dual approach warrants closer examination in light of both actual practices and research findings.

Given that, as Delahaye (2015) points out with regard to the French education system, it is important to adopt pedagogical approaches “based on both high standards and compassion, and that help students succeed by emphasizing cooperation and solidarity rather than competition,” this conference will focus on the ways in which this commitment is being put into practice in different regions, particularly with regard to the transition from preschool to elementary school.

In addition to presenting the Passerelle program in the Montpellier School District, as well as similar initiatives in Quebec, at the Freinet Institute in Vence, and in other contexts, this event aims to provide concrete—and well-documented—details regarding this joint effort between the community and the institution. It will also provide an opportunity to reflect on what this entails in terms of cooperation, through both “alternative” and traditional teaching methods.

This event is organized by LIRDEF, the CLÉ Collective (Quebec), and the Faculty of Education at the University of Montpellier, in partnership with MAIF and MGEN.
