Many challenges currently surround the production ofbig data. Scientific research is obviously not immune to this phenomenon, which stems from the digital revolution and whose effects are evident from the very moment data is collected. Formulating scientific hypotheses based on data analysis is becoming a standard practice in the production of scientific knowledge, thereby opening up new avenues for reflection on data acquisition, preservation, and archiving practices to ensure data is “FAIR” (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable). These upheavals also affect the practices of data dissemination and utilization within the collaborative yet competitive context of scientific research.

Building on these considerations and the many questions they raise—such as access, dissemination, and sharing; scientific integrity; traceability; and value creation—the interdisciplinary CommonData project continues its program with this third workshop, dedicated to the storage and archiving of research data.

The discussion will thus address, in turn, issues related to the longevity of storage and archiving methods, as well as those concerning the contractual guarantees provided by service providers and the legal classification of research data under the legal provisions applicable to public data or archives.
