Auguste Comte’s philosophy: Is it still relevant today?
This event has already taken place!
Nour-Eddine Belabbas, Professor of Philosophy of Law.
The ideas of Auguste Comte (a native of Montpellier), although they originated in the 19th century, continue to inspire contemporary thought as well as cultural and intellectual events.
Overview
Among the thinkers who left a profound mark on the “long 19th century” is undoubtedly Auguste Comte, the author of a major philosophical work. The founder of positivism not only developed a philosophy of science but also formulated a political and social philosophy that was to culminate in the establishment of a new religion, the “religion of humanity.” Due to its ambitions, scope, systematic nature, and radicalism, Auguste Comte’s thought is as fascinating as it is complex.
The aim of this conference will be to examine its content, reception, and relevance today.
Introduction:
- bio-bibliographical references;
- the foundations of Auguste Comte's philosophy;
- the overall issue.
The presentation will focus on two main areas:
- the reception of A.C.'s thought (historical moments, theoretical and political issues, etc.);
- the undeniable contributions in methodological, epistemological, and epistemic terms.
