Nour-Eddine Belabbas, Professor of Philosophy of Law.

The thinking of Auguste Comte (originally from Montpellier), although born in the 19th century, continues to inspire contemporary reflections and cultural and intellectual events.

General overview

Among the thinkers who profoundly influenced the "long 19th century" was undoubtedly Auguste Comte, author of a major philosophical work. The founder of positivism not only built a philosophy of science, but also developed a political and social philosophy that was to be crowned by the establishment of a new religion, the "religion of humanity." Because of its ambitions, its scope, its systematicity, and its radicalism, Auguste Comte's thought is as fascinating as it is complex.

This conference will examine its content, reception, and relevance today.

Introduction:

  • bio-bibliographical references;
  • the foundations of Auguste Comte's thinking;
  • the general issue.

The intervention will focus on two areas:

  1. the reception of A.C.'s thinking (historical moments, theoretical and political issues, etc.);
  2. the undeniable contributions in terms of methodology, epistemology, and epistemic knowledge.
