MARBEC Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary: Art and Science at the Heart of the Ocean

The Research Joint Research Unit (MARine Biodiversity, Exploitation & Conservation), dedicated to the study of marine biodiversity and its uses, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2025. To mark the occasion, MARBEC is organizing a series of events open to the public, titled “Art and Science at the Heart of the Ocean.” On the program: exhibitions of photography, paintings, and sculptures, as well as eight Art and Science evenings in Montpellier and Sète, bringing together the perspectives of scientists and artists on marine biodiversity.

Open to the general public, this exhibition offers an artistic and scientific immersion into the heart of marine biodiversity. Twenty-seven photographs of marine biodiversity, taken by scientists from the UMR MARBEC, are displayed along the path through the botanical garden.
This tour leads to the Orangerie, where paintings by Françoise Dagorn and sculptures by Laurent Yvelin are on display, each inspired by the richness of the marine world. The artists will be present throughout the exhibition to interact with visitors.

On display in Victor Hugo Square, across from the Michèle Weil University Center building, 45 photographs taken by scientists from the MARBEC Joint Research Unit showcase marine biodiversity around the world.
In the Michèle Weil University Center building, which was open to the public during the four evenings of the "Art and Science at the Heart of the Ocean" event, Sarah Thiriet’s exhibition "Inspiration Murex" features sculptures inspired by the diverse forms of marine biodiversity.
