The practice of female genital mutilation remains taboo in the 21st century. There is a heavy silence surrounding these practices, such that those affected do not dare to speak out. However, field studies show that these practices continue to exist, including in Europe.

The symposium, organized by the Montpellier Criminal Law and Forensic Science Team (EDPFM), aims to bring together different perspectives on the practice of female genital mutilation, with a dual focus on theoretical and empirical considerations as well as domestic and international considerations. On a subject that is rarely addressed as such, the symposium will provide an opportunity to take stock of the situation and outline medical, legal, and ethical perspectives, through rich contributions from academics and professionals.
