She collaborates with The New Yorker, Nike… and the University of Montpellier. A visual artist and illustrator who knows no boundaries, Aya Kakeda takes us on a journey from Tokyo to New York and shares her professional experience, allowing us to delve deep into the roots of her art. Her work—a graphic tapestry populated by marvelous creatures—possesses the poetry of dreams and paints a captivating world. An evening to discover the origins of Aya Kakeda’s graphic universe and immerse yourself in an extraordinary experience!

An internationally renowned artist

Aya Kakeda was born in Tokyo, Japan. She moved to the United States at age 16. Today, she creates her artistic works in Brooklyn, New York. Her art is exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, spanning mediums such as paper, fabric, and ceramics, and inspires leading commercial brands.

Aya Kakeda has worked with The New York Times, The New Yorker, Nike, Delta, Disney Hyperion Books, Kidrobot, Nickelodeon, and many others. She also teaches in New York at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the School of Visual Arts.

Aya Kakeda has helped create various graphic materials designed to promote art and culture within the institution: she created the illustrations for the Art & Culture Department’s promotional materials, including a limited-edition risograph print.

In March, she was also invited byUM part of Women’s History Month to lead an art workshop for students and university staff.

MICA—the Maryland Institute College of Art, where Aya Kakeda teaches alongside her artistic practice—has awarded the artist a grant to fund her trip to Montpellier and enable her to pursue these activities.
