More students with disabilities are gaining access to higher education. Several laws have made this progress possible, notably the law of February 11, 2005, which guarantees the right to disability compensation. Beyond the contributions of this general legal framework, most disabilities require an individualized response that takes into account the specific needs of students and facilitates their inclusion in the university community while respecting the rights and duties of all.
This is the case for students with autism spectrum disorders. These disorders manifest themselves in particular through alterations in the ability to establish social interactions and inappropriate behaviors.
Cognitive difficulties may be associated with these disorders, but they are far from systematic. It is therefore our responsibility to ensure that these young people with autism who do not have intellectual disabilities are able to progress in their university studies, even in a context that is often not conducive to this, as it requires social skills—in group work, for example.
Through testimonials and theoretical contributions, the evening debate "Autism and Higher Education" will provide an opportunity to discuss the difficulties faced by these students, address their academic support, and provide some keys to better mutual understanding.
