Come watch the eclipse and the shooting stars at Malbosc Park!

  • Category: Astronomy Observation Night
  • Dates: August 12, 2026
  • Hours: 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Location: Malbosc Park , Montpellier

On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, scientists from the University of Montpellier and their partners invite you to an evening of stargazing open to everyone at Malbosc Park in Montpellier. On the agenda: eclipse viewing and science activities from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., a potluck dinner, followed by a guided tour of the night sky and shooting star viewing starting at 10:00 p.m.

Join us from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Malbosc Park to safely observe the eclipse and talk with scientists about this exceptional astronomical phenomenon.

The observation will be led primarily by elementary and high school students from the Paillade neighborhood. Accompanied by astronomers and engineers from the Montpellier Universe and Particles Laboratory (LUPM) and the Charles Coulomb Laboratory (L2C), these students participated in the ECLIPSE2026 educational project from February through June 2026.

Devices for safely observing the Sun—including Solarscopes manufactured at the University of Montpellier’s Faculty of Sciences—will allow the public to follow the event. Protective glasses specially designed for observing an eclipse will also be distributed free of charge, while supplies last (up to 250 pairs).

After the eclipse, the evening will continue with a potluck dinner (everyone is invited to bring food and drinks to share), followed by a guided tour of the starry sky from 10:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., led by Vincent Guillet, an associate professor at the Faculty of Sciences and a researcher at LUPM.

Come with your family or friends to enjoy a fun time together, learn about astronomy, and look up at the sky!

Free, no reservation required.

Please note: The number of eclipse viewing glasses available is limited to 250. They will be distributed on-site, while supplies last. Never look directly at the Sun without proper protective equipment. If you wish to purchase special eclipse glasses yourself, make sure they are new and that the “ISO 12312-2” standard is clearly marked on them. Only this marking ensures that you are properly protected when observing the Sun.

Sky observation is still subject to favorable weather conditions.

This event is organized by the Montpellier Universe and Particles Laboratory (LUPM), in collaboration with the Montpellier Astronomical Society and the Paillade Campus project, with support from the University of Montpellier, the Charles Coulomb Laboratory (L2C), the French Society of Astronomy and Astrophysics (SF2A), andOREME.
