Tour of the University of Montpellier Herbarium

Open to students and staff.

Due to the site’s historical layout (which includes steps), it is unfortunately not accessible to people with limited mobility.

The University of Montpellier Herbarium, listed internationally under the acronym MPU in the Index Herbariorum, is—in terms of the size and quality of its collections—one of the most important herbaria in France, second only to that of the National Museum of Natural History.

Serving as both a research tool and a cultural heritage resource, the University of Montpellier MPU Herbarium contains approximately three million specimens, including mosses, algae, lichens, and fungi, as well as a variety of documentary collections (collection journals, scientific publications, illustrations, etc.).

The oldest specimens are believed to date back to Richer de Belleval’s herbarium (16th century), while the most recent ones are contemporary. Each year, new acquisitions enrich the university’s collection, further enhancing the herbarium’s scientific and cultural significance.
