A l'UM la science [S03-ep10] : Politics in Spain
This week on A l'UM la science, Hubert Peres, a researcher at Cepel, the center for political and social studies which celebrates its 40th anniversary this month, talks to us about his book La politique en Espagne. Our last-minute guest is Christine Lerrede, who presents the next OREME conference. A program co-produced with Divergence FM and broadcast every Wednesday at 6pm on 93.9.
CEPEL was founded 40 years ago in Montpellier. Founded in 1983 under the impetus of Paul Alliès, a well-known figure in the Faculty of Law and Political Science, it began life as the "Centre comparatif des politiques publiques et des espaces locaux". In 1999, Jean-Pierre Gaudin took over from him, and two years later CEPEL became the "Centre d'études politiques de l'Europe latine" (Centre for Latin European Political Studies), thus expressing the privileged relationship that the team's researchers maintain with the objects and academic networks of southern European countries.
In 2003, Hubert Peres took over as head of the laboratory. He was replaced in 2014 by William Genieys, but CEPEL had not yet completed its transformation. In 2020, under the direction of Emmanuel Négrier, CEPEL became the Center for Political and Social Studies, to better include the sociologists, philosophers, ethnologists and even epidemiologists who had joined the team.
To celebrate these 40 years of research, exchange and collaboration, CEPEL is organizing an international colloquium on December 14 and 15, entitled "Le territoire dans tous ces états" ("Territory in all its states"). The eclectic range of topics will showcase the diversity of research topics covered by this forty-year-old research center.
And to join in the celebrations, we've chosen to invite one of CEPEL's leading figures: Hubert Peres, political science researcher and former director of the laboratory. And the timing is perfect, since he has just published a book entitled La politique en Espagne, published by La Découverte.
How was the Spanish nation born? How did the transition to democracy take place after Franco? How were independence demands and the autonomist response shaped? How has the current political scene been reorganized? We'll be tackling all these questions with him over the next 20 minutes.
