# Science Is Fun: From the “reuse” to the grow rooms

Welcome to *La science s’aMuse*, the science show co-produced by UM and Divergence-FM, which takes you on a tour of the Muse laboratory complex. This week, Julie Mendret fromthe European Institute of Membranes talks to us about wastewater reuse, and Benjamin Perret from the BPMP gives us a behind-the-scenes look at his culture chambers.

I won’t hide the fact that the week got off to a very, very bad start here. It was to be expected, but there you go! By constantly drawing on our reserves without planning ahead, we found ourselves without a single drop of water on board. Panic among the passengers, anger among the crew—in short, we were on the verge of a mutiny! And if we managed to pull through this time, it’s thanks to the presence among our ranks of specialists in “reuse”—in other words, the reuse of wastewater. A response to the challenges of climate change, which could help alleviate tensions over water resources thanks to the many quantitative and qualitative benefits that reuse offers in limiting water consumption. Our guest today is Julie Mendret, a researcher atthe European Membrane Institute (IEM), and her work reminds us that in the face of the looming global water shortage, we are all in this together.

In the second half of the show, our “In the Engine Room” segment will take us to the Laboratory of Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Physiology (BPMP). Benjamin Péret, a research director at the CNRS, will show us the growth chambers where he studies the unusual roots of the lupin. Finally, Amrin will join us for his special startup segment, and we’ll talk about quinoa.

Science is Fun—you’ve got the ticket, let’s go!
