OREME's December Lectures!

On December 5 and 14, OREME (the Montpellier Environmental Research Observatory, an internal unit of the University of Montpellier) will host a series of short, multidisciplinary lectures aimed at raising awareness and fostering discussion on the issue of climate change at Planet Océan and on the University of Montpellier’s Triolet campus.

December 5 at Planet Ocean: “Latest News on the James Webb Space Telescope: From Project Design to Groundbreaking Initial Results”

Planet Ocean Montpellier and the Research Environmental Research Observatory (OREME) are joining forces for a unique series of lectures. By combining their expertise—Planet Ocean, dedicated to entertainment as well as the exploration and preservation of environmental heritage, and OREME, a key player in climate change observation—they promise an immersive experience. Together, they will raise public awareness of the challenges of biodiversity conservation and heritage management. This unique collaboration, combining scientific knowledge with an educational approach, aims to inspire wonder and educate, thereby strengthening the commitment to environmental preservation. A promising partnership dedicated to fostering a better understanding of the world and raising awareness of today’s challenges.

The conference in a nutshell

Eric Josselin, Professor astrophysics at the University of Montpellier, specializes in stars at the end of their lives. His research draws on observations spanning the visible, infrared, and radio wavelengths. This has led him to analyze data from major infrared missions such as IRAS (NASA) and the Infrared Space Observatory (ESA). From the project’s conception to its first groundbreaking results, Eric Josselin will bring us the latest news on the James Webb Space Telescope, which has been the subject of so much discussion.

December 14 at the Triolet Campus of the University of Montpellier: “Climate Change: Talking About It to Take Action”

On Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the Triolet campus, the University of Montpellier will host the lecture “Climate Change: Let’s Talk About It So We Can Take Action!” It will be presented by Christine Leredde, a geophysicist and associate professor at the University of Montpellier.

Free lecture; no registration required (subject to availability)

The conference in a nutshell

After laying out the scientific basis for global warming, we will review the latest advances in climate prediction models as well as various greenhouse gas (GHG) emission scenarios. The presentation of model outputs, including so-called optimistic and pessimistic projections, will open the discussion on the political and social dimensions, particularly regarding the choices made by the various participants at COP 27 (Egypt, 2022).

Christine Leredde is a lecturer at the Géosciences Montpellier laboratory, which is part of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Montpellier within the “Earth, Water, and Environment” department. She is a geophysicist specializing in borehole measurements, particularly as applied to paleoclimatology.
