UM its commitment to the inclusion of LGBT+ individuals in higher education
A pioneer in the field of inclusion, the University of Montpellier—the first French university to sign, in 2016, the charter ofthe association L’Autre Cercle promoting the inclusion of LGBT+ people in the workplace—is today renewing its commitment. A new signing ceremony for the LGBTQIA+ Education Commitment Charter took place on November 4, 2025, at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research Space.

This initiative builds on the actions undertaken over the past several years. As early as 2022,UM reaffirmed its commitment by officially renewing the charter during a ceremony held on campus, attended by Minister Sylvie Retailleau. With this new initiative, the University of Montpellier reaffirms its commitment to ensuring a respectful and inclusive learning and working environment for its entire community: students and staff, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Four Key Objectives
The charter is based on four main areas of focus, which guide the institution’s inclusive policy:
- create an inclusive work and study environment for LGBT+ individuals;
- ensure equal rights and treatment regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity;
- support victims of discriminatory remarks or actions, and ensure that appropriate support and counseling services are available;
- to assess progress and promote best practices, with the aim of bringing about sustainable improvements to the professional environment and learning conditions in higher education.
Through this renewal, the University of Montpellier reaffirms its commitment to an increasingly inclusive academic community, where everyone can thrive in an atmosphere of trust, respect, and equality.
