UM reaffirms its commitment to the inclusion of LGBT+ people in higher education
A pioneer in inclusion, the University of Montpellier—the first French university to sign theAutre Cercle association's charter in 2016 promoting the inclusion of LGBT+ people in the workplace—is today renewing its commitment. A new signing of the LGBTQIA+ Charter of Commitment for Education took place on November 4, 2025, at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research Space.

This initiative is part of a series of actions that have been underway for several years. In 2022, UM reaffirmed its commitment by officially renewing the charter during a ceremony held on campus, attended by Minister Sylvie Retailleau. With this new act, the University of Montpellier confirms its commitment to ensuring a respectful and inclusive study and work environment for its entire community: students and staff, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Four key objectives
The charter is based on four main areas of action, which guide the institution's inclusive policy:
- create an inclusive work and study environment for LGBT+ people;
- ensure equal rights and treatment regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity;
- support victims of discriminatory comments or acts, and ensure that appropriate listening and support mechanisms are in place;
- measure progress and promote best practices in order to bring about lasting change in the professional environment and study conditions in higher education.
Through this renewal, the University of Montpellier reaffirms its commitment to an increasingly inclusive university community, where everyone can thrive in an atmosphere of trust, respect, and equality.
