[LUM#22] Portraits of AI

Generative AI, symbolic AI, deep learning, neural networks… To better understand the scope of the ever-present field of artificial intelligence, Lum invites you to delve into its methods, explore its scientific and social applications, and examine its limitations. Issue 22 of Lum was published in October 2024.

Artificial intelligence has become indispensable in research. Not only because it enhances research capabilities by speeding up certain tasks, but also because it is itself a subject of research that the University of Montpellier has fully embraced.

This22nd issue of Lum magazine naturally aims to help you better understand artificial intelligence. First, in the opening section devoted to methods, we’ll explore what AI is—a question with as many answers as there are people discussing it. What are neural networks, machine learning, federated learning, and symbolic AI? In this section, Lum breaks down the basics of AI with the computer scientists and mathematicians who are at the heart of the technology.

The second section explores the uses of AI, which can prove to be an unexpected ally in artistic creation or an innovative tool for better understanding communication among mandrills. AtUM, AI is also used to predict cracking in concrete, detect fake news, and study glaciers.

Finally, the third section examines the social applications of AI, such as its contributions to public discourse. It also explores its limitations, as it is a technology that consumes large amounts of energy and data. This section also raises the pressing question of AI’s role in higher education and its appropriate use by students.

Take a look at these AI portraits as you read this 22nd issue of Lum magazine in its augmented version, which gives you access to theUM podcasts:UM atUM ” and “Lumlu.”
