Science at UM [S01-ep14]: From the Hearo robot to the MedXCell company
This week, Frédéric Venail, medical director at Gui de Chauliac University Hospital, opens the doors to the operating room for the third cochlear implant trial assisted by the semi-autonomous Hearo robot. In the second part of the program, Amrin will introduce us to MedXcell, then Agnès Pesenti will reveal the next science bar on the theme of "Screens and violence: the current situation."

For A l’UM la science, we visited the ENT department at Gui de Chauliac University Hospital, where Professor Fréderic Venail, medical director of the otology and otoneurology unit, agreed to open the doors of the operating room to us so we could observe a cochlear implant procedure assisted by the semi-autonomous Hearo robot: a first in France!
First of all, what is a cochlear implant? It involves inserting a miniature electrode into the cochlea, or inner ear, which stimulates the cochlea to improve hearing in people with severe to profound hearing loss.
The operation we witnessed was performed as part of a clinical research protocol, as it was assisted by the hearo robot. This machine was designed by the Swiss company Cascination and MED-EL to perform the first phase of this cochlear implant by drilling a tunnel into the inner ear.
The robot is linked to medical imaging, enabling it to calculate the optimal milling trajectory and reduce the risk of damaging the structures of the inner ear.
The protocol provides for ten trials: we attended the third one and, without wanting to spoil our report, it ended in success...
In the second part of the program, we remain in the medical field with the return of Amrin, who will introduce us to the company MedXCell.
To conclude the program, Agnès Pesenti, head of scientific culture, will announce the next science bar, which will be held at Le Dôme on Thursday, March 17, at 8:30 p.m. On the agenda: "Screens and violence: current situation."
