A l'UM la science [S01-ep16]: From production diversity to food diversification for women in Tunisia

This week we welcome Cédric Gaillard, economics researcher at CIRAD, and Eric Verger, nutrition researcher at IRD. They are both members of the Moisa team team, and talk to us about their study on the link between diversification of agricultural production in Tunisia and diversification of women's diets.

Today's theme takes us to Tunisia, more precisely to the governorate of Sidi-Bouzid in the center of the country. A region characterized by fertile plains, karst subsoils and an economy based on agriculture: cereals, market gardening, fruit trees as well as livestock and dairy production.

For those interested in current affairs or contemporary history, Sidi Bouzid is also the birthplace of the Jasmine Revolution in 2011, when a young fruit and vegetable vendor set himself on fire to protest against his living conditions, thus exposing to the eyes of the world the deep-seated dysfunctions of Tunisian society.

Our guests are Eric Verger, nutrition researcher, and Cédric Gaillard, economics researcher. They have chosen Sidi Bouzid as the field of investigation for a study into the link between diversification of production on family farms and diversity in the diets of the women who live and work there. A project carried out in collaboration withINNTA, the Tunisian Institute of Nutrition and Food Technology.

Their study, published in Plos One on February 8, presents an original and innovative approach, the fruit of fieldwork carried out as part of the Medina project on food systems in the Mediterranean.
