A l'UM la science [S01-ep03]: Representations of obesity at the Baillarguet insectarium

In this program, sociologist Sylvain Ferez and anthropologist Yann Beldame from the Santesih laboratory examine the views of obese people who are candidates for bariatric surgery. In the second half of the program, we head for CIRAD Baillarguet, where Sophie Ravel and Karine Huber take us on a tour of the insectarium.

According to the World Health Organization, 39% of adults worldwide are overweight and 13% are obese. In France, this percentage rises to 17% for adults. According toInserm, these figures have remained stable over the last ten years, unlike the figures for bariatric surgery, which have risen steadily over the last 20 years.

So why do we do these surgeries? How are they performed? And above all, what do they reveal about the normative categories through which obesity is perceived in medical circles and in society at large?

Researchers from the SANTESIH laboratory in Montpellier set out to interview these candidates for weight loss surgery. Their findings are set out in an article entitled " Weight surgery and the weight of surgery ", to be published in 2021 in the journal Sciences sociales et santé. A survey carried out in partnership with the digestive surgery department of Montpellier University Hospital.

Yann Beldame, researcher in social anthropology and ethnology, and Sylvain Ferez, sociologist, lecturer at the University of Montpellier and director of the SANTESIH laboratory, are with us in the Divergence-FM studio.

In the second half of the program, we take you to the CIRAD Baillarguetinsectarium. Glossins, ticks or mosquitoes, Sophie Ravel from UMR Intertryp and Karine Huber from the Astre team, tell you all about arthropod breeding.

At UM la science you've got the program, here we go!
