Doctoral program between the University of Montpellier (UM) and the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS)

The University of Montpellier (UM) and the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (ANAS) are keen to strengthen their partnership in areas of common interest.

To this end, UM and ANAS have agreed to collaborate on a maximum of two cotutelle theses for 2021-2022, exclusively for students of Azerbaijani nationality holding at least a Master's degree (or equivalent) recognized as such by both institutions.

This call for applications aims to identify collaborative projects between research teams at the University of Montpellier and ANAS research units.

Financing principle :

As part of this program, the PhD student will spend 2 years at UM as part of a cotutelle thesis and 1 year in an ANAS laboratory. ANAS is committed to funding the selected Azerbaijani students:

  • the cost of a return trip between Azerbaijan and France
  • a monthly remuneration of 1,200 euros for a total of 24 months during their stay at the UM.
  • the cost of health, accident and repatriation insurance.

The principle of cotutelles is that the co-directors and the doctoral student organize, as soon as the application is selected, the division of the doctoral student's stay between Azerbaijan and France, i.e. the division of the 24-month stay spent in a UM-accredited research unit and 12 months spent in an ANAS research unit.

ANAS covers laboratory costs related to the time the PhD student spends in the UM laboratory: 1000 euros / year / PhD student for non-experimental sciences; 3000 euros / year / PhD student for experimental sciences.

Priority themes :

The themes are defined each year by ANAS. The priority themes for 2021-2022 are as follows:

  • Molecular paleontology
  • RNA biology

Submission of applications :

The UM Doctoral Schools concerned propose several thesis topics, each from a UM thesis director. These topics are then proposed to ANAS, which in turn proposes candidates (doctoral students and ANAS thesis directors).

The final selection of applications will be made by a joint UM / ANAS committee.

Proposals for thesis topics must be submitted to the doctoral schools authorized by the University of Montpellier, which will then forward them by email.
