Exposum

Content type: Page
The ExposUM Institute is an initiative of the University of Montpellier and its partners aimed at establishing an open, off-campus institute of reference for the study, training, and science-society interaction of the environmental determinants of human health. Winner of the ExcellenceS (PIA4) call for projects and supported by the Occitanie Region, ExposUM is funded to the tune of €46.4 million over the period 2022-2030. The exposome corresponds to all lifetime exposures to environmental and social factors whose specific effects, combined with the intrinsic characteristics of individuals, underlie health and the onset, progression, and severity of infectious and non-communicable human diseases. In this sense, it is the environmental counterpart of the genome, with which it interacts throughout an individual's lifetime. See the ExposUM Institute website Calls for projects Objective To provide an innovative conceptual framework for studying multiple environmental risks and their combined effects GATe: Gather people to Generate, Apply, Transmit knowledge Axis 1: Generate knowledge: accelerate the acquisition of basic knowledge in a coordinated, interdisciplinary and non-segmented manner Axis 2: Apply knowledge: define global mitigation strategies adapted to the local context and encourage innovation. Key challenges facing the Occitanie region

Content type: Page
Advancing regional research to better preserve biodiversity, combat vector-borne diseases, imagine the viticulture and oenology of tomorrow, and respond to the collective challenges of the water cycle...  These are just some of the scientific challenges that the University of Montpellier and its regional partners intend to tackle by taking on four of the 15 "key challenges" identified and supported by the Occitanie Region. The "key challenges" are initiatives launched by the Occitanie Region to support the collective dynamics of research stakeholders in Occitanie. Focusing on strategic issues for our region, they aim to encourage the structuring of scientific communities, thereby making regional research even more collaborative, visible, and attractive, and to produce excellent research in line with the Region's political priorities, in particular the Green New Deal Transformation Plan adopted by the Plenary Assembly on November 19, 2020. Each key challenge receives €2 million in regional aid to implement its action plan over a period of four years. Among the 15 challenges supported by the Region, the University of Montpellier is leading the way on the "key challenges" of biodiversity, water, infectious risks, and vines and wine, in collaboration with numerous partners throughout the region. BIODIVOC key challenge Officially launched on April 1, 2021, the Biodivoc project aims to develop fundamental research in ecology and evolution around the theme of "Dynamics, resilience, and management of biodiversity and ecosystems under human-induced environmental pressures." Biodivoc website Key challenge RIVOC Officially launched on March 18, 2021, the objective of the RIVOC "Infectious Risks and Vectors" project is to develop innovative and sustainable approaches to improve the understanding, surveillance, and control of these diseases and their vectors. Rivoc website VINIDOCC Challenge The "Innovation for the future of viticulture and oenology in Occitanie" project was launched on September 16, 2022, to conduct multidisciplinary, fundamental, and applied research and devise new practices for the viticulture and oenology of tomorrow. Find out more BIO'OCC Challenge Bio'Occ is a project funded by the French government as part of the France 2030 plan. This ambitious regional initiative aims to attract, train, and retain the talent and players of tomorrow by developing specialized training courses in the field of biotherapies and bioproduction. Find out more Key challenge: "Water Occitanie":  The Water Occitanie project aims to develop expertise in wastewater reuse, design and analyze infrastructure, equipment, and governance to respond to stakeholders' constraints at the local level, produce an assessment of the consequences at the level of large watersheds, and analyze the cumulative capacity to respond to the collective challenges of the large water cycle. In addition to the technical and logistical resources specific to the institutions, an alert system has been set up. When it is triggered: High-powered outdoor sirens will sound. Messages will be sent to indicate the nature of the alert (email, text message, voice message for reception areas and security posts). Please note: only @umontpellier email addresses will receive messages. If you wish to receive these messages by text message, you must register at the following address:https://consentement.umontpellier.fr/web/ Case 1: evacuation If a threat endangers people in the building, the message sent by the alert system will encourage them to: evacuate safely if possible (escape) hide if it is dangerous to leave Follow the instructions from the ministry by visiting www.encasdattaque.gouv.fr Case 2: Taking shelter If the threat comes from outside (chemical attack, terrorist attack in a neighboring building, etc.), the message sent by the alert system will encourage people to: take shelter follow the instructions given in these areas via a representative linked to the crisis unit (stay indoors, wait for the police to organize the evacuation, etc.) These areas are indicated by the following visual: University alert drills Drills will be conducted each year to test the alert system and remind people of the measures in place at the university. When the alert system is triggered, a sound will be broadcast by sirens and messages will be sent simultaneously by email to indicate the site concerned and the action to be taken (escape or take shelter). Environmental issues and social responsibility

Content type: Page
Welcome to the page dedicated to environmental issues and social responsibility at the University of Montpellier! Heritage and commitment: A tradition of progress The University of Montpellier has more than 800 years of science and innovation behind it. In keeping with this tradition, the University has been committed to and involved in environmental and social issues for many years. The UM's ongoing commitment is recognized both nationally and internationally, whether through the THE Impact ranking, in which the University is ranked first nationally in "health and well-being," or the prestigious Shanghai ranking, which highlights research and teaching quality in ecology, water management, and agriculture. Large-scale mobilization The University's commitment is resolutely people-oriented. Internally, this is reflected in the adaptation of teaching to contemporary issues and the implementation of numerous actions for both students and staff in favor of inclusiveness, equality, and diversity in particular. This commitment permeates the institution and its entire community through the development of several framework documents focused on ecological transition and social responsibility, each with its own visibility and objectives. The deployment of the action plans resulting from these strategic documents requires, on the one hand, a strong command of various fields: social, societal, and ecological; and, on the other hand, a significant investment in line with the recommendations of organizations such as the Ministry, the IPCC, the High Council for Climate, and standards such as sustainable development and social responsibility (DD&RS). Far from being purely financial, these investments are above all human. Indeed, these plans and strategies cannot stand alone; it is all of the University's stakeholders who bring them to life and implement them. From project leaders to users of the systems, the entire community plays a key role in achieving the objectives set. The UM promotes, shares, and constantly develops this shared vision by supporting staff in the development of social and environmental skills. The aim is to promote a culture of curiosity and learning that extends beyond the university-student relationship and permeates all levels of the organization. Beyond the University Externally, UM contributes to the dissemination of knowledge by organizing conferences, debates, events, and exhibitions open to schoolchildren and the general public. As a public institution, UM seizes every opportunity to strengthen the links between science and society. In the face of future challenges, this connection is essential in order to put the benefits of the advances, knowledge, and innovations developed by the University of Montpellier and its laboratories at the service of society. This is why it actively promotes responsible research and is committed to enriching its teaching by integrating the challenges of ecological transition and sustainable development. The University is thus training tomorrow's leaders to take better account of the social, societal, and environmental specificities of our time. Education is a pillar of the functioning of our societies, and the University is proud to promote high-quality training and teaching that is firmly rooted in the challenges of today and tomorrow. Beyond training, it is also a question of promoting curiosity wherever it arises, particularly in moments of exchange and sharing between researchers and civil society, which the UM encourages by organizing various events that provide opportunities to strengthen and perpetuate the links between science and society.
