Succeeding in School
The University of Montpellier supports the success of all its students by offering academic support services tailored to each individual’s needs and circumstances. As a result, students enrolled in a Special Academic Program (such as elite athletes, artists, working students, and innovative entrepreneurs) can receive support that addresses their specific challenges. In all these situations, provided that the University recognizes one of these statuses, we are here to support you, helping to make your academic journey smoother and guiding you toward success.
Tutoring
Tutoring is a support program designed to help students succeed, offered at most departments of the University of Montpellier.
Free of charge, the tutoring program provides support to students throughout the academic year. It fosters a true partnership between students and faculty, allowing students to apply their knowledge in practice through sessions organized by tutors.
Tutors are upperclassmen who are either currently enrolled in a training program (trainee tutors) or have completed a specific “Tutor Certification” program (certified tutors).
Would you like to participate in the tutoring sessions?
To do so, you must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Montpellier. You can find all the information regarding tutoring sessions at your faculty, school, or institute.
Are you interested in becoming a tutor?
If you are enrolled at the University of Montpellier in a degree program, you can apply to the relevant tutoring coordinator. To do so, you must submit a cover letter, a resume, and specify the type of tutoring you wish to provide. You may be asked to attend an interview. If your application is accepted, you will receive training before beginning your role as a certified tutor.

Innovative student entrepreneur
The Innovative Student Status is a program that allows eligible students to receive accommodations for their coursework and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in a traditional degree program or an apprenticeship program leading to a national degree at the University of Montpellier, following a recommendation from the “Innovative Student” committee. Students seeking this status must demonstrate:
- enrollment in at least the third year of higher education (third year of a bachelor’s degree, third year of a BUT program, engineering program, master’s degree, etc.);
- an application package that aligns with professional and entrepreneurial goals and allows for the presentation of:
– an innovative entrepreneurial project related to one of the “Feed, Care, Protect” challenges;
– a strong passion for entrepreneurship and innovation.
In addition to academic programs, the University of Montpellier offers innovative student entrepreneurs personalized support through entrepreneurial initiatives such as INITIUM, which provide specific assistance to early-stage entrepreneurs. This support may include the following:
- Mentoring: access to a network of mentors with experience in innovation and entrepreneurship.
- Training: Participation in workshops and seminars focused on innovative entrepreneurship, covering topics such as startup financing, intellectual property protection, and business development.
- Access to UM resources: conditional use of UM facilities, such as laboratories, research centers, and coworking spaces, for project development.
Entrepreneurial projects may involve:
- A personal entrepreneurial project: developing an innovative idea and turning it into a business venture. This project is entirely student-led.
- Leveraging intellectual property: structuring a fictional or real startup to capitalize on ideas or discoveries related to existing intellectual property owned by one or more founding members of the Montpellier PUI. This type of project allows participants to practice business creation based on existing research results, even if no project leader has yet been identified.
- Participation in a research and/or technology project: joining a team of scientists within a research and/or training unit at the PUI in Montpellier, with the goal of starting a business. This project allows participants to refine an idea in preparation for potential patent protection (intellectual property) and the creation of a business.
Clarification regarding the PEPITE national status
The "Innovative Entrepreneur" status granted by the University complements and enhances the national "Student Entrepreneur" status offered by PEPITE (Student Hubs for Innovation, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship), by providing specific support to students with innovative entrepreneurial projects that address the three major challenges facing our society: "Feeding, Healing, and Protecting."
However, the national student entrepreneur status issued by PEPITE does not automatically grant the status of innovative student entrepreneur at the University of Montpellier. The two statuses may nevertheless be held concurrently if, on the one hand, the innovation meets the criteria and, on the other hand, the solution addresses one of the three major challenges.
How do I qualify for Innovative Entrepreneur status?
Submit a request to the office where you are enrolled. You will also need to submit a form along with an application package. Applicants are asked to provide any documents that demonstrate their connection to the entrepreneurial project.
Working student
Employee status is a program that allows eligible students to receive accommodations for their coursework and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in an initial degree program leading to a national degree (excluding work-study programs and general and advanced programs in medical, pharmaceutical, and dental sciences) following a recommendation from the Employee Status Committee.
Students who are eligible for this status and may therefore benefit from the provisions implemented under this program must provide proof of employment under a contract:
- At least 10 hours per week on average, or 40 hours per month if the contract lasts for fewer than 12 consecutive weeks.
- At least 120 teaching hours per semester or 240 hours during the academic year for an employment contract lasting more than 12 consecutive weeks.
How do I become an employee?
Submit a request to the office where you are enrolled. Students applying for this status will be required to submit a form along with their employment contract. The various faculties at the University of Montpellier will publish the application schedule on their websites.
Student Engagement
With a view to promoting student success, the University of Montpellier recognizes and takes into account student engagement. This program allows students to receive recognition for their engagement and/or to benefit from academic accommodations in connection with their engagement.
List of activities covered by the student engagement program:
- volunteer work with an organization governed by the 1901 law;
- professional activity;
- sports activities, provided that the individual is registered on the lists referred to in Article L 221-2 of the Sports Code;
- military activity within the operational reserve;
- enlistment in the National Police's operational reserve;
- volunteer firefighter recruitment;
- civic service commitment;
- volunteer service in the military
- service as an elected official on one of the institution’s councils (including central councils and councils of academic departments, schools, and institutes), on the CNESER, the CROUS, or in a local government body;
- students who are members of a student life committee or a student council (faculties, schools, institutes);
- students who hold union office;
- any civic engagement activity recognized by the UFR, School, or Institute of enrollment.
Recognition of Student Engagement
Recognition of student engagement is based on the validation of the skills, knowledge, and abilities acquired through the activities listed above.
Student involvement may be recognized even if it takes place abroad or during a gap year.
How can you get your student involvement recognized?
Students who wish to have their volunteer work recognized must submit a request to the office where they are enrolled.
The application must be supported by a statement of purpose and accompanied by a document in which the student specifies and describes his or her activity or activities, and/or by documents certifying such activity.
The activity listed in the validation request is not necessarily credited toward the academic year in which it is completed.
The same courses may be counted toward degree requirements only once per academic cycle, regardless of the year of study within that cycle (i.e., Bachelor’s–Master’s).
In what forms can student involvement be recognized?
The jury’s recognition of the validation of skills, knowledge, and abilities may take various forms, provided that these are specified in the assessment guidelines:
- an elective course to which ECTS credits are assigned; This course does not involve any instruction and may be included in all curriculum outlines. In addition, each curriculum must specify the number of ECTS credits assigned to this teaching unit. The number of ECTS credits assigned to this teaching unit is a minimum of 2 ECTS credits, either two ECTS credits in addition to the required ECTS credits or 2 ECTS credits included within the required ECTS credits;
- a partial or full exemption from the internship;
- the awarding of “bonus points” toward the overall average, at the jury’s discretion;
- the issuance of digital badges.
Academic Planning in the Context of Student Engagement
Under this program, students enrolled in a degree program at the University of Montpellier who are engaged in one of the activities listed in the introduction may apply for an academic accommodation.
To do so, the student must submit an application to the Registrar’s Office, along with supporting documents relevant to their situation, in accordance with the deadlines and timeframes set by the department, school, or institute where they are enrolled.
The request for special accommodations must be accompanied by a statement of reasons and supporting documentation that allows the teaching staff to assess this commitment.

The Bridge: A Path to a New Direction
The transition program is a reorientation initiative that allows students to continue their academic studies in a different field than the one they initially chose. It thus provides opportunities for students to continue their studies and succeed at the University of Montpellier.
There are many pathways available, some of which are guaranteed by law and others that are accessible under certain conditions. A non-exhaustive list is provided below for informational purposes.
Each academic unit, school, or institute sets its own practical guidelines for its transfer programs, including procedures, application requirements, and timelines. It is therefore essential to contact the relevant institution directly for more information.
Who is eligible to apply for a bridge program?
Any student enrolled in a program at the University of Montpellier may apply to change their major through a transfer program. The program is open to students in their first through fourth years of study.
When can I apply for a bridge loan?
You can apply for a change of major through the transfer program. In any case, you should visit the website of your UFR (faculty), school, or institute of enrollment to obtain all the information related to the desired transfer program.
Student aide
Student Assistant status is a program that allows eligible students to receive accommodations for their coursework and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in an undergraduate program leading to a national degree at the University of Montpellier, following approval by the relevant academic department, school, or institute.
Eligible students must provide regular and frequent non-professional assistance to a close family member or friend who has lost their independence due to age, a disability, or a chronic or debilitating illness, in order to help them perform all or part of their daily living activities.
The person receiving care may be a family member of the student (parent, child, sibling, spouse), their cohabiting partner, or their civil union partner.
- In addition to the academic accommodations offered, student caregivers are eligible for easier access to need-based financial aid, including four additional weighting points.
- The university also offers free psychological support for students who are caregivers.
Consultations with psychologists are available by appointment during individual, confidential, and free sessions at the various locations of the Joint Department of Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion (SCMPPS). Telephone consultations may also be offered depending on the situation.
