Succeeding in your studies

The University of Montpellier contributes to the success of all its students by offering support measures tailored to each individual's needs and specific circumstances. Students benefiting from a Special Study Program (high-level athletes, artists, employees, innovative entrepreneurs, etc.) can receive support appropriate to their circumstances. In all these situations, subject to recognition of one of these statuses by the University, we are here to help you facilitate your studies and support you on your path to success.

Tutoring

Tutoring is a support system designed to help students succeed, which has been set up in most departments at the University of Montpellier.

Free of charge, tutoring provides support to students throughout the academic year. A true synergy between students and teachers, it allows students to put their knowledge into practice through sessions organized by tutors.

Tutors are senior students who are either in training (trainee tutors) or have completed specific training to become qualified tutors (qualified tutors).

Would you like to participate in the tutoring sessions?

To do so, you must be enrolled at the University of Montpellier in an initial training program. You will find all the information you need about tutoring sessions at your faculty, school, or institute.

Would you like to become a tutor?

If you are enrolled at the University of Montpellier for a national degree, you can apply to the relevant tutoring coordinator. To do so, you must provide a cover letter, a resume, and specify the type of tutoring you wish to do. You may be asked to attend an interview. If your application is successful, you will receive training before starting as a qualified tutor.

High-level athlete

The status of high-level student athlete (SHN) is a scheme that allows eligible students to benefit from adjustments to their studies and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in an initial training program leading to a national degree at the University of Montpellier, following review by the high-level sports commission. Students who are eligible must:

  • either be registered on the ministerial lists;
  • either be in a PPF-recognized training structure or in a professional club's training center or have an employment contract with a professional club;
  • either be a judge and/or referee or high-level sports coaches;
  • or meet the criteria on this list.

Student Artist

Student artist status is also a scheme that allows eligible students to benefit from adjustments to their studies and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in an initial training program leading to a national degree at the University of Montpellier, following review by the artist committee. Eligible students must provide proof of:

  • intensive artistic activity involving a significant amount of individual and/or collective practice

and

  • an activity recognized by enrollment in cultural and artistic institutions such as conservatories, art schools, theater schools, dance schools, or specialized universities or university programs. Regular participation in recognized cultural events, such as renowned competitions or festivals, may also lead to this recognition.

In addition to academic support, the University of Montpellier offers art students personalized assistance provided by the Campus Life Department (DVC). This assistance may include:

  • the connection between the various beneficiaries of the status;
  • meetings with artists and contributors who work with the art and culture department and other figures from the artistic and cultural world;
  • the provision of documentary resources;
  • participation in practical workshops, seminars, or conferences on the professionalization of one's field (copyright, intermittent work, arts and cultural education, cultural policies, etc.).

Innovative student entrepreneur

Innovative entrepreneur status is a scheme that allows eligible students to benefit from adjustments to their studies and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in a traditional or apprenticeship-based initial training program leading to a national diploma at the University of Montpellier, following review by the "Innovative Student" committee. Students who are eligible must provide proof of:

  • enrollment in at least the third year of higher education (third year of a bachelor's degree, BUT 3, engineering program, master's degree, etc.);
  • an application file that fits with a professional and entrepreneurial objective and allows for the presentation of:

– an innovative entrepreneurial project related to one of the challenges of "Feeding, Caring for, and Protecting";

– a strong appetite for entrepreneurship and innovation.

In addition to academic support, the University of Montpellier offers innovative student entrepreneurs personalized assistance through entrepreneurial programs such as INITIUM, which provide specific support to entrepreneurs in the early stages of their ventures. This assistance may include the following:

  • Mentoring: access to a network of experienced mentors in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Training: participation in workshops and seminars dedicated to innovative entrepreneurship, covering topics such as startup financing, intellectual property protection, and business development.
  • Access to UM resources: conditional use of UM facilities, such as laboratories, research centers, and coworking spaces, for project development.

Entrepreneurial projects may involve:

  • A personal entrepreneurial project: developing an innovative idea and transforming it into a business project. This project is entirely initiated by the student.
  • Intellectual property valuation: structuring a fictitious or real startup to promote ideas or discoveries associated with already defined intellectual property belonging to one or more founding members of the Montpellier PUI. This type of project allows participants to practice business creation based on existing research results, even if no project leader has yet been identified.
  • Participation in a research and/or technology project: integration into a team of scientists within a research and/or training component of the Montpellier University Hospital, with the aim of entrepreneurship. This project allows participants to refine an idea in preparation for possible patent protection (intellectual property) and the creation of a business.

Clarification regarding PEPITE national status

The innovative entrepreneur status awarded by UM complements and enriches the national student entrepreneur status offered by PEPITE (Student Centers for Innovation, Transfer, and Entrepreneurship), providing specific support to students with innovative entrepreneurial projects that address the three major challenges facing our society: "Feeding, Caring for, and Protecting."

However, the national student entrepreneur status issued by PEPITE does not automatically grant the status of innovative student entrepreneur at the University of Montpellier. The two statuses can nevertheless be combined if, on the one hand, the innovation is characterized and, on the other hand, if the response to one of the three major challenges is qualified.

How do I obtain Innovative Entrepreneur status?

Submit a request to your school registrar. A form accompanied by an application file must also be submitted. Applicants are asked to provide any documents that demonstrate their connection to the entrepreneurial project.

Working student

Employee status is a scheme that allows eligible students to benefit from adjustments to their studies and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in initial training for a national diploma (excluding work-study programs and general and advanced training in medical, pharmaceutical, and dental sciences) after consultation with the employee committee.

Students who are eligible for this status and who, as such, can benefit from the provisions implemented under this scheme must provide proof of professional activity governed by a contract:

  • A minimum of 10 hours per week on average, or 40 hours per month if the contract is for less than 12 consecutive weeks.
  • A minimum of 120 hours per semester of teaching or 240 hours during the academic year for an employment contract lasting more than 12 consecutive weeks.

How do I obtain employee status?

Apply to your school of enrollment. Students applying for this status will be asked to submit a form along with their employment contract. The various faculties of the University of Montpellier will publish the application schedule on their websites.

Student Engagement

With a view to student success, the University of Montpellier promotes and recognizes student engagement. This program allows students to receive recognition for their engagement and/or benefit from study accommodations in line with their commitments.

List of activities covered by the student engagement program:

  • volunteer work within an association governed by the law of 1901;
  • professional activity;
  • sporting activity, provided that it is included in the lists referred to in Article L 221-2 of the Sports Code;
  • military activity in the operational reserve;
  • enlistment in the operational reserve of the national police force;
  • volunteer firefighter commitment;
  • civic service commitment;
  • volunteer service in the armed forces
  • activity as an elected representative on one of the institution's councils (including central councils and councils of departments, schools, and institutes), on the CNESER, the CROUS, or in a local authority;
  • students who are members of a student life office or student office (UFR, Schools, Institutes);
  • students holding a union position;
  • any civic activity recognized by the UFR, the School, or the Institute of enrollment.

Recognition of student engagement

Recognition of student engagement results from the validation of skills, knowledge, and abilities acquired through activities such as those listed above.

Student engagement can be recognized even if it takes place abroad or as part of a gap year.

How can you get your student involvement recognized?

Students who wish to have their commitment recognized must submit a request to their registrar's office.

The request must be justified and accompanied by a document in which the student specifies and describes his/her activity(ies) and/or documents certifying this.

The activity listed in the validation request is not necessarily credited to the academic year in which it is carried out.

The same activities can only be validated once per academic cycle, regardless of the year of study within that cycle (meaning Bachelor's or Master's degree).

In what form can student engagement be recognized?

Recognition of the validation of skills, knowledge, and abilities by the jury may be assessed in various forms, provided that these are included in the knowledge assessment procedures:

  • A free teaching unit to which ECTS credits are assigned; this teaching unit does not involve any teaching and can be included in all training programs. In addition, each program must specify the number of ECTS credits assigned to this teaching unit. The number of ECTS credits assigned to this teaching unit is a minimum of 2 ECTS, i.e., two ECTS in addition to the required ECTS or 2 ECTS integrated into the required ECTS;
  • partial or total exemption from the internship;
  • the awarding of "bonus points" in the overall average at the discretion of the jury;
  • the awarding of digital badges.

Study arrangements within the framework of student engagement

Through this program, committed students enrolled in a degree program at the University of Montpellier who are engaged in one of the activities listed in the introduction may request special accommodations for their studies.

To do so, students must submit a request to their registrar's office, accompanied by supporting documents specific to their situation, in accordance with the periods and deadlines set by the faculty, school, or institute where they are enrolled.

The request for accommodation must be justified and supported by documentation that allows teaching staff to assess this commitment.

Gateways

The gateway: a path to reorientation

The bridge program is a reorientation mechanism that allows students to continue their academic career in a different field than the one they initially chose. It thus offers opportunities to continue their studies and succeed at the University of Montpellier.

There are many gateways, either legal or accessible under certain conditions. A non-exhaustive list is available below for informational purposes.

Each faculty, school, or institute sets its own rules for transfers: procedures, application requirements, and schedule. So, it's really important to check with the place you're interested in.

Who can request a gateway?

Any student enrolled in a program at the University of Montpellier may request to change courses via a transfer program. The program is open to students in their first through fourth year of study.

When can I request a gateway?

It is possible to request a change of program via the transfer system. In all cases, you should consult the website of your faculty, school, or institute to obtain all the information related to the desired transfer.

Student helper

The status of student assistant is a scheme that allows eligible students to benefit from adjustments to their studies and/or exams. It may be granted to any student enrolled in an initial training program leading to a national degree at the University of Montpellier, after consultation with the relevant faculty, school, or institute.

 Eligible students must regularly and frequently provide non-professional assistance to a close family member who has lost their independence due to age, disability, or a chronic or debilitating illness, helping them to perform all or part of the tasks or activities of daily living.

The person receiving assistance may be a member of the student's family (parent, child, sibling, spouse), their cohabiting partner, or their civil union partner.

  • In addition to the proposed study accommodations, student assistants can benefit from easier access to scholarships based on social criteria, with four additional points awarded.
  • The University also offers free psychological support to assist student caregivers.

Consultations by appointment with psychologists during individual, confidential, and free interviews at the various offices of the Joint Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion Service (SCMPPS). Telephone consultations may also be offered depending on the situation.

  • For more information, all details are available on the SCMPPS website of the SCMPPS.
