How should you respond to a terrorist attack or a major incident on campus?

The specific safety plan is an organizational plan designed to ensure the safety of people in the event of a major incident or an attack.

How is PPMS triggered?

Crisis response teams are established at each site. They activate the Site-Specific Safety Plan (PPMS) when necessary.

How will I be notified?

Scenario 1: I witness a terrorist attack or a major incident

Case 2: Someone tells me

If the threat comes from outside (a chemical attack, a terrorist attack in a nearby building, etc.), the message sent by the alert system will encourage people to:

  1. to take cover
  2. to follow the instructions issued in these areas by a designated representative in coordination with the crisis management team (stay where you are, wait for law enforcement to organize the evacuation, etc.)

These areas are indicated by the following graphic:

Case 3: I am alerted by the audio alert system set up by the university

What resources?

In addition to the technical and logistical resources available at each facility, an alert system has been implemented. When it is triggered:

  • High-powered outdoor sirens will sound.
  • Notifications will be sent to indicate the nature of the alert (email, text message, or voice message for reception areas and security stations).

Please note: Only email addresses ending in @umontpellier will receive these messages. If you would like to receive these messages via text message, you must sign up at the following address:

Case 1: Evacuation

If a threat endangers people in the building, the message sent by the alert system will encourage them to:

  1. evacuate safely if possible (escape)
  2. hide if it's dangerous to leave

Follow the guidelines from the Ministry by visiting www.encasdattaque.gouv.fr

Case 2: Taking shelter

If the threat comes from outside (a chemical attack, a terrorist attack in a nearby building, etc.), the message sent by the alert system will encourage people to:

  1. to take cover
  2. to follow the instructions issued in these areas by a designated representative in coordination with the crisis management team (stay where you are, wait for law enforcement to organize the evacuation, etc.)

These areas are indicated by the following graphic:

University Emergency Drills

Exercises will be conducted annually to test the alert system and review the procedures in place at the university.
When the alert system is triggered, an alarm will sound via sirens, and messages will be sent simultaneously via email to indicate the affected location and the appropriate action to take (evacuate or take cover).
