Doctoral Training and HDR

Doctoral programs

Doctoral schools affiliated with institutions of higher education bring together a network of research teams that oversee the training and career development of doctoral students. They provide future PhDs with high-level academic guidance as well as preparation for entering the workforce.

Links to research and the scientific quality of laboratories, the recruitment process for doctoral students and the funding policy for dissertations, supervisory capacity and training policies, partnerships with the socio-economic sector, and incentives for mobility and European and international outreach are all key criteria for the accreditation of doctoral schools.

The emphasis placed on implementing the thesis charter—a binding agreement between the doctoral student, their thesis advisor, the director of the doctoral school, and the director of the host laboratory—serves as a guarantee of quality, as it defines the rights and responsibilities of all parties involved. The preparation of a thesis must, in fact, be part of a personal and professional project with clearly defined objectives and resources.

Doctoral School of the University of Montpellier

The primary mission of the University of Montpellier Doctoral College (CD-UM) is to support doctoral students throughout their doctoral research by offering interdisciplinary professional training to help them identify their future career paths at the local, national, and/or international levels. One of the objectives is to promote doctoral students’ career profiles across all socio-economic and cultural sectors. More specifically, the objectives of the CD-UM are:

  • to provide doctoral students with an outstanding professional education, ensuring a high-quality training experience;
  • to strengthen the interdisciplinary and international aspects of doctoral education;
  • to prepare doctoral students for their transition into the workforce;
  • to promote doctoral studies among the socio-economic community and civil society.

The doctoral schools have adopted a shared digital tool that streamlines the management of procedures related to doctoral training (from enrollment through to the defense) and enables doctoral students and PhD holders to showcase their skills within this network. This digital management tool (ADUM: Single Shared Doctoral Access) also enables the CD-UM to organize all the training programs offered to doctoral students each year (tracking registrations, withdrawals, cancellations, validation, evaluation, etc.).

Thus, the Doctoral College of the University of Montpellier reinforces, complements, supports, and expands the systems established within the doctoral schools to meet the requirements set forth in the decree of May 25, 2016.

Ph.D. enrollment

A doctoral program, which is conducted within a doctoral school, is a program focused on and driven by research. The doctoral student’s research is carried out under the supervision of a thesis advisor within a research unit. The doctoral program is conducted in accordance with the amended decree of May 25, 2016.

To apply for a doctoral program, applicants must hold a master’s degree or another degree conferring the rank of master’s upon completion of a program of study that demonstrates their aptitude for research.

If this degree requirement is not met, the President of the University of Montpellier may, by way of exception and upon the recommendation of the Doctoral School Council, admit candidates to the doctoral program who have completed studies of equivalent level or who have had their prior learning and experience recognized. Enrollment in the doctoral program is authorized by the President of the University of Montpellier upon the recommendation of the Director of the Doctoral School, following consultation with the thesis advisor and the Director of the research unit.

A doctoral program typically takes three years of full-time research. In other cases, the duration of the doctoral program may be up to six years.

The Director of the Doctoral School ensures that the necessary scientific, logistical, and financial conditions are in place to guarantee the smooth progress of the doctoral student’s research and thesis preparation. The admission requirements for candidates are established by the Doctoral Schools.

Student Life and Campus Contribution

What is CVEC?

The CVEC is the Student and Campus Life Contribution. The law stipulates that it is collected by the CROUS. Students may be subject to it or exempt from it, depending on their circumstances. The CVEC is a contribution “intended to promote the reception and social, health, cultural, and athletic support of students and to strengthen prevention and health education initiatives carried out for their benefit,” implemented on July 1, 2018.

Who is affected (subject to the CVEC)?

  • Ph.D. student in the initial training program
  • A joint-supervised doctoral student, provided that he or she pays tuition fees to the University of Montpellier (see joint-supervision agreement)

A mandatory procedure

There are two different cases:

  • either the doctoral student must pay a lump-sum fee to the CVEC before enrolling at the University of Montpellier
  • or the doctoral student is exempt.

In both cases, a certificate will be issued; this must be presented at the time of administrative registration.

Who is exempt?

  • Refugee PhD Students
  • Doctoral students eligible for subsidiary protection
  • Doctoral students who are registered as asylum seekers and have the right to remain in the country
  • Ph.D. students receiving French government scholarships (BGF)

When should you do this?

The doctoral student must pay this fee after receiving the enrollment authorization email sent by the Doctoral Studies Office.
No refunds will be issued for the CVEC fee.

Where can I do this?

  • Step 1: Log in to the website cvec.etudiant.gouv.fr
  • Step 2: Payment (unless exempt); for payment details, visit the CROUS website
  • Step 3: Download the certificate; you will be asked to provide it during registration (even if you are exempt): this is mandatory.

Who is not subject to the CVEC?

  • A joint supervision doctoral student, since they do not pay tuition fees to the University of Montpellier but to the partner institution (see joint supervision agreement)
  • Incoming PhD student on an Erasmus exchange program
  • Doctoral students in continuing education, meaning those whose tuition is covered by their employer or a funding agency. For more information, please contact the Continuing Education Office
  • No action is required (no CVEC certificate needs to be provided).
