Exposum
The ExposUM Institute is an initiative of the University of Montpellier and its partners aimed at establishing a leading, cross-disciplinary, off-campus institute dedicated to the study, education, and science-society interaction regarding the environmental determinants of human health.Winner of the call for proposals ExcellenceS (PIA4) and supported by the Occitanie Region, ExposUM is funded to the tune of €46.4 million for the period 2022–2030.
The exposome refers to the sum of an individual’s lifetime exposures to environmental and social factors, whose specific effects—combined with the individual’s intrinsic characteristics—underpin health as well as the onset, progression, and severity of infectious and noncommunicable diseases in humans. In this sense, it is the environmental counterpart to the genome, with which it interacts throughout an individual’s lifetime.
Objective
To provide an innovative conceptual framework for studying multiple environmental risks and their combined effects
GATe: Bringing people together to generate, apply, and share knowledge
Priority Area 1: Generating knowledge: accelerating the acquisition of foundational knowledge through a coordinated, non-segmented interdisciplinary approach
Priority 2: Applying knowledge: developing comprehensive mitigation strategies tailored to the local context and encouraging innovation. Learn more
Priority 3: Sharing Knowledge: promoting the education of the next generation of scientists
