In today’s complex sports landscape, economic models, regulations, fame, social media, athletes’ lifestyles, and other factors all create pressures that can affect their mental and physical health. The same is true for healthcare systems. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that, at least in North-Western countries, work arrangements (pay and schedules), business models, pharmaceutical industry strategies, underfunding, and government regulations are contributing to the breakdown of healthcare systems while simultaneously heightening the expectations of society and patients.

Faced with such challenges, a growing network of experts has turned to complexity science to help professionals develop a clearer and more comprehensive understanding of the complex social systems in which they operate and to become more effective.

During this interactive seminar (in English), Professor Brian CASTELLANI will provide participants with a set of tools to help them understand their professionalism within the context of a complex system.

The seminar is organized as follows:

  1. An Introduction to the Value of Complex Systems Thinking for Professionalism.
  2. Presentation of a three-part model of professional complexity, accompanied by exercises focusing on descriptions of the psychological challenges that complexity can present.
  3. Involvement of the audience to explore the complex and varied contexts in which the professionals present work.
  4. An exploration of the various types of professionalism currently in practice.
