There's no denying the reality of prisoner suicide. Faced with this reality, the Prison Administration initiated a proactive policy of suicide prevention in prisons as early as 1967. This mobilization led to the implementation of a major national plan of action to prevent suicide among inmates in 2009, and the creation in 2010 of the Mission de prévention et de lutte contre le suicide (Mission for the prevention and fight against suicide), tasked with managing the suicide prevention system in prisons. It is within this framework, in particular, that a number of prisons have since been experimenting with supportive cellmates.
In order to think about the creation and development of prevention methods, both conceptually and in the field, we need to think from different angles. This is the purpose of the conference organized by Professor Marie-Christine Sordino, Director of the Montpellier Criminal Law Team (EDPM-UMR 5815).
This conference will bring together two key players who are deeply involved in the theoretical and practical aspects of suicide in detention: Mr. Loïc Parayre, Deputy Director of the Tarascon Detention Center, and Dr. Stéphane Bonnet, Psychiatrist, CRIAVS-LR-CHRU Montpellier, Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone Prison.
