This photo essay was created by Nacim Guellati, an undergraduate student at the University of Montpellier, who participated in a scientific expedition to Antarctica on board the Arctic Sunrise, a ship belonging to the environmental organization Greenpeace.

Under the scientific direction of Professor David Mouillot, she brought together the MARBEC laboratory at the University of Montpellier and SpyGen, a company certified as a “Companies on Campus” by iSite MUSE and specializing in the study of environmental DNA. It was part of a major research program aimed at collecting DNA samples from organisms found in all the world’s oceans to analyze the effects of global warming and industrial fishing on the behavior of marine species.

This unprecedented effort to observe and document Antarctica’s biodiversity is accompanied by a political commitment to take action to preserve the polar regions and establish marine reserves in order to protect this natural heritage.
