Shanghai Ranking: UM reaffirms its excellence in the thematic areas of the I-SITE Excellence Program

Oceanography, geography, agricultural sciences, veterinary and food sciences, water resources, biotechnology… These are just some of the disciplines in which the University of Montpellier ranks highly in the Shanghai Ranking by Subject, while maintaining its position among the world leaders in ecology.

For the fifth consecutive year, the University of Montpellier has secured third place in the global rankings for ecology, according to the highly anticipated Shanghai subject-specific rankings. It thus ranks third behind the prestigious University of Oxford, which holds the top spot, and the University of Minnesota, which ranks second globally.

Global leaders in environmental protection

“We are proud to remain among the world leaders in environmental science, said Philippe Augé, president of the University of Marseille. “Now more than ever, the University and its laboratories must be responsive to society’s expectations.” This achievement was praised by Sylvie Retailleau, Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation.

On July 19, the University of Montpellier achieved excellent results in the release of the Shanghai Subject Rankings, placing among the top 100 universities worldwide in five subject areas—oceanography, earth sciences, veterinary sciences, statistics, and remote sensing—as well as among the top 50 universities in six subject areas: geography (47th), water resources (45th), food sciences (49th), agricultural sciences (17th), and biotechnology (35th).

The I-SITE Excellence Program

In oceanography, earth sciences, geography, and biotechnology, the University of Montpellier ranks among the top 100 universities worldwide. The water sciences community, which was already honored in 2019 with the creation of a UNESCO international center dedicated to water, has once again been recognized by ranking among the top 100 universities in the world.
According to François Pierrot, Vice President of UM and Executive Director of I-SITE, “this ranking reveals a true alignment between our objectives and our I-SITE Excellence Program, as the vast majority of disciplines featured in this ranking fall within the key themes of our project.”

Feed, heal, protect. Three terms, three issues, three global challenges that have mobilized the University and the scientific community since 2017 as part of this major excellence initiative. “Our results in this ranking should be seen as further proof of the strength of our scientific capabilities and the effectiveness of the synergy fostered by the I-SITE Excellence Program,” concludes Philippe Augé, adding that “I-SITE must also serve to support, through these various calls for proposals, initiatives led by other communities.”
