In addition to the student life facilities in each UFR, school and institute, two student residences (MDE) and the (S)pace, located on the Richter and Triolet campuses, provide students with access to cultural, sports and community activities. MDE Aimé Schoenig (Richter site) Inaugurated in December 2006, the MDE "Aimé Schoenig" is located on the Richter campus in the south of Montpellier. It is named after Aimé Schoenig, a medical student who died heroically in 1944. The MDE Aimé Schoenig is also home to other student services: Service Universitaire des Activités Physiques et Sportives (SUAPS), Service Commun de Médecine Préventive et de Promotion de la Santé (SCMPPS). MDE rules and regulations MDE Françoise Barré-Sinoussi (Triolet site) Opened in February 1998, this MDE is located on the Triolet Campus. It is named after Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, a French researcher famous for her discovery of the retrovirus responsible for AIDS, HIV, in 1983. This major breakthrough in the understanding of the virus earned her the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2008. Screenings, concerts, exhibitions and conferences are organized by student associations throughout the academic year at the MDE Françoise Barré-Sinoussi. The MDE is also open to UM staff.
