Marine Biodiversity, Exploitation, and Conservation (MARBEC)

MARBEC

The general objective of the UMR is to study marine biodiversity in lagoonal, coastal, and offshore ecosystems at different levels of integration (molecular, individual, population, and community), and human uses of this biodiversity.

Using a variety of observation, experimentation, analysis, and modeling tools, the unit specifically addresses the following objectives:

  • describe marine biodiversity, understand its dynamics and the functioning of marine ecosystems;
  • analyze the impact of anthropogenic pressures on these ecosystems and develop scenarios for responding to global change;
  • reconcile exploitation (particularly fishing and aquaculture) with conservation and meet societal expectations (expertise, innovation, remediation).
