The University of Montpellier encourages innovation within its laboratories and designs innovative solutions that benefit people and the environment thanks to Research carried out by its researchers. From technology to medicine, environmental engineering to social sciences, UM promotes the scientific work of researchers by giving it economic and societal value directly linked to the challenges facing the industrial world. The promotion of research work stimulates scientific innovation and has an impact on society and the socio-economic world. This encourages cooperation between laboratories and external partners and also generates new sources of revenue. Avenues for promotion Several avenues for promotion are available to researchers wishing to put their research to use in the socio-economic world: Technology transfer to an academic or industrial partner Provisions of the Innovation Act (participation in the creation of companies and the activities of existing companies, scientific competitions, participation in governance bodies, etc.) Technology transfer Technology transfer facilitates the market entry of solutions resulting from research work. To this end, the University of Montpellier formalizes this transfer by establishing several types of commercialization contracts, such as: Co-ownership agreements License agreements Rights transfer agreements Good to know The University of Montpellier is one of the leading patent filers Filing a patent is one of the stages of commercialization that can subsequently lead to an operating license or a rights transfer agreement. It serves to protect, negotiate, and collect financial resources from an innovation generated through the work carried out by our scientific community. In 2022, the University of Montpellier is listed among the top 50 patent applicants to the INPI, ranking among the top 10 higher education institutions in France with the most patents filed. The University of Montpellier has a subsidiary responsible for accelerating technology transfer. The University of Montpellier has also set up a commercialization subsidiary, the technology transfer acceleration company SATT AxLR. The latter has an investment fund to support research teams in the maturation of their projects and to develop innovations in line with market needs. It also offers access to the intellectual property rights of the University of Montpellier on technologies it manages.
