The Montpellier Universe and Particles Laboratory (LUPM) is dedicated to the study of the Universe as a whole and in its smallest dimensions. At LUPM, researchers and faculty members study fundamental constituents—from the most elementary particles, atoms, and molecules to the largest and oldest gravitational structures, such as stars and galaxies. Organized into three scientific teams, the LUPM’s research scope is very broad and covers major areas of theoretical physics, as well as fundamental and observational astrophysics—including the physics of the early universe, the study of elementary particle properties, the nature of dark matter, the sources of high-energy cosmic rays, the formation of the first molecules in the Universe, the structure and evolution of stars, and their interaction with the interstellar medium. Through its activities, the Laboratory of Mechanics and Civil Engineering addresses original research topics based on fundamental questions, as well as more recent topics stemming from interactions with biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, and other fields. Organized into seven research teams, the LMGC covers a broad spectrum of topics ranging from welding to thermography, including biomechanics, wood, mathematics, granular media, and innovative structures. The L2C is a physics laboratory distinguished by the fact that, within a single unit, it brings together a wide range of expertise—from the most mathematically intensive theoretical physics to physical chemistry and biophysics—with a strong foundation in fundamental research focused on condensed matter and nanoscience. The Montpellier Alexander Grothendieck Institute (IMAG) is a joint research unit of the CNRS and the University of Montpellier with nearly 170 members, located on the University’s Triolet campus. Research at IMAG covers a very broad spectrum, ranging from fundamental mathematics to industrial applications, as well as educational theory and epistemology. The laboratory is organized into four research teams: Geometry, Topology, and Algebra (GTA); Analysis, Industrial Scientific Computing, and Optimization of Montpellier (ACSIOM); Probability and Statistics (EPS); Mathematics Education and Epistemology (DEMa). The UMR ESPACE-DEV conducts research on the spatial dynamics that characterize eco-sociosystems. LIRDEF conducts research in the fields of education and training, focusing on three main areas: Education, Policies, and Society; Knowledge, Practices, and Pedagogy; Work, Training, and Professional Practices. These activities focus specifically on teaching-learning processes, the activities of actors in professional contexts, processes of socialization, professionalization, and identity formation, as well as “education for,” the history of teaching, and the design of situations with educational objectives. LIRDEF is currently involved in several research projects funded at the national or international level. LIRDEF serves as a support laboratory for the ACEF Master’s program (Analysis and Design in Education and Training, UPVM, UM), DDS (Science Didactics, UM, Univ. Lyon 1, ENS Lyon), and the four specializations of the MEEF Master’s program (Professions in Teaching, Education, and Training, UM).
