Its objective is to strengthen the mechanisms put in place by the University of Montpellier to promote awareness of and adherence to ethical and professional principles in response to the questions raised by scientific progress and its contemporary societal implications, regardless of the field of research. The Montpellier Universe and Particles Laboratory (LUPM) is dedicated to the study of the universe as a whole and in its smallest dimensions. At LUPM, researchers and faculty members study fundamental constituents—from the most elementary particles, atoms, and molecules to the largest and oldest gravitational structures, such as stars and galaxies. Organized into three scientific teams, the scope of research at LUPM is very broad and covers major areas of theoretical physics, as well as fundamental and observational astrophysics—such as the physics of the early universe, the study of the properties of elementary particles, the nature of dark matter, the sources of high-energy cosmic rays, the formation of the first molecules in the Universe, the structure and evolution of stars, as well as their interaction with the interstellar medium. Through its activities, the Laboratory of Mechanics and Civil Engineering addresses original research topics rooted in fundamental questions, as well as more recent topics arising from interactions with biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, and other fields. The L2C is a physics laboratory distinguished by the fact that, within a single unit, it brings together a wide range of expertise—from the most mathematically oriented theoretical physics to physical chemistry and biophysics—with a strong foundation in fundamental research focused on condensed matter and nanoscience. A significant portion of L2C’s activities is application-oriented, resulting in patents, industrial collaborations, and even the creation of startups.
